Role Overview
We are looking for a strong engineering leader who is still very much an engineer at heart. This is not a pure people management role. The successful candidate needs to be comfortable going deep into systems, challenging design decisions, and helping raise the technical bar across the organisation.
This role will lead multiple teams through engineering managers, with a clear expectation to stay close to what is actually being built. A significant part of the job is improving how we operate — not by adding process, but by driving better engineering discipline and clearer ownership.
Key Responsibilities
- Technical Leadership: Go deep into systems, challenge design decisions, and raise the engineering bar across the organisation. Remain hands-on and technically credible with the teams.
- Structural Problem Solving: Take ownership of known problem areas — including instability in lower environments, integration issues between systems, and lack of coordination across releases. Identify root causes and fix them structurally, not just manage around them.
- Execution & Delivery: Bring clarity to messy or ambiguous requirements, push back where needed, and keep teams moving. Improve delivery predictability without slowing down the pace of work.
- Team & People Leadership: Lead engineering managers and senior engineers across multiple teams. Mentor individuals on real design decisions and trade-offs, and hold teams accountable for true end-to-end ownership of what they build.
- Engineering Culture: Champion engineering discipline, clear system ownership, and a culture where fewer surprises reach testing and production.
Skills and Qualifications
- 18+ Years of experience in IT, application development, hands on leadership roles.
- An engineer at heart who has grown into leadership — not a leader who has drifted away from engineering
- Someone who can engage in the details without getting lost in them
- A natural mentor who earns respect through technical credibility, not just title
- A clear communicator who can simplify complexity and bring alignment across teams
- Someone who takes structural ownership of problems, not just tactical workarounds
- Strong background in distributed systems, APIs, and data flows
- Hands-on experience with CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices
- Deep understanding of production systems — how they fail and how to design for resilience
- Ability to walk through systems built personally, articulate trade-offs, and explain how issues were diagnosed and resolved
- Experience leading multi-team engineering organisations through engineering managers
This Role Is Not For
- Someone who has been fully hands-off technically for a long time, or someone who operates purely at a high-level strategy layer without engaging in the details.
