Mission of the Role : The Functional Safety Specialist is responsible for ensuring that automotive electronic systems comply with ISO 26262 and related safety standards. The role involves safety concept creation, hazard analysis, safety requirements engineering, technical safety architecture, verification planning, and supporting hardware/software teams through the full safety lifecycle.

Key Responsibilities

  • Functional Safety Lifecycle Management
  • Lead and execute activities across the ISO 26262 V-model safety lifecycle, from concept phase to SOP.
  • Develop and maintain the Functional Safety Plan, timelines, and work products.
  • Ensure processes are followed and all safety artifacts are created and reviewed.
  • Safety Analysis & Concept Development
  • Perform Hazard Analysis and Risk Assessment (HARA) and derive ASIL levels.
  • Develop Functional Safety Concept (FSC) and Technical Safety Concept (TSC).
  • Define safety goals, safety mechanisms, and safety requirements (FSR/TSR).
  • Requirements Engineering
  • Write, review, and maintain functional and technical safety requirements.
  • Ensure bi-directional traceability between requirements, design, implementation, and validation.
  • Support system, hardware, and software teams to interpret and implement safety requirements.
  • Hardware & Software Safety
  • Collaborate with hardware architects to define safety mechanisms for MCU, PMIC, watchdog, self-tests, power domains, fault handling, etc.
  • Support software teams in designing safety-compliant drivers, boot, diagnostics, and monitoring logic.
  • Review MCU safety manuals, safety architecture, and vendor documentation (e.g., Infineon Traveo II, NXP, Renesas).
  • Safety Analysis & Verification
  • Conduct and review FMEA, FTA, FMEDA, DFA, Dependent Failure Analysis.
  • Calculate FIT rates, single-point fault metrics, and latent fault metrics.
  • Create safety validation plans and support unit/integration/system-level testing.
  • Audits, Assessments & Compliance
  • Prepare safety case documentation for customer and auditor reviews.
  • Work with internal/external assessors (TV, Exida, OEM auditors).
  • Support ASPICE, cybersecurity (ISO 21434), and quality-compliance alignment.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration
  • Provide training and guidance to development teams on ISO 26262 processes.
  • Work directly with system architects, hardware designers, software teams, testing, quality, cybersecurity, and program management.
  • Participate in design reviews and ensure safety considerations are incorporated early.

Required Skills & Qualifications

Technical Skills

  • Strong understanding of ISO 26262 Part 212 and full safety lifecycle.
  • Expertise in safety analyses: FMEA, FTA, FMEDA, DFA.
  • Understanding of safety architecture for MCUs, SoCs, and automotive ECUs.
  • Experience with safety mechanisms: lockstep CPUs, watchdogs, ECC, BIST/MBIST, CRC, voltage monitoring, clock monitoring, safe states, etc.
  • Experience with requirements management tools: DOORS, Polarion, Jama, etc.
  • Working knowledge of embedded systems, microcontrollers, hardware design, and automotive software development.

Domain Knowledge

  • Automotive electronics: clusters, body control, powertrain, ADAS, infotainment, or battery systems.
  • Exposure to ASPICE, ISO 21434 (Cybersecurity), and OEM-specific safety processes.
  • Experience
  • 515 years of experience in automotive embedded systems.
  • Minimum 5+ years in Functional Safety roles.
  • Experience delivering at least one safety-critical product to SOP.
  • Preferred Qualifications
  • Certified Functional Safety Engineer/Professional (TV, Exida).
  • Experience with safety implementation on MCUs like Infineon Traveo II, NXP S32, Renesas R-Car, TI Hercules.
  • Master's degree in Electronics, Electrical, Embedded Systems, or related engineering field.
  • Experience with model-based development (MATLAB/Simulink).
