Role Purpose
The Senior Accountant is the financial right hand to the CMD, responsible for ensuring cash discipline, billing rigor, and project-wise financial visibility.
In the absence of a CFO, this role must convert execution into cash, surface financial risks early, and provide clear, decision-ready financial inputs to the CMD.
This is not a clerical accounting role; it is a control and support role critical to scale from 13 cr to 100 cr.
Core Accountabilities1. Cash Flow & Working Capital Control (Primary)
- Track daily and weekly cash-in vs cash-out and highlight gaps to CMD.
- Prepare weekly cash position and 30/60/90-day cash forecasts.
- Monitor receivables, advances, retention money, and payables.
- Ensure cash availability aligns with site execution priorities.
- Alert CMD proactively on cash stress, funding gaps, or upcoming obligations.
2. Project-wise Profitability & Cost Visibility
- Maintain project-wise accounting (revenue, cost, margin).
- Track actual costs vs BOQ / estimates and flag overruns early.
- Coordinate with Project Managers for timely capture of costs and variations.
- Prepare monthly project profitability statements for CMD review.
- Identify margin leakage and delayed recovery areas.
3. Billing, Credit Control & Collections Discipline
- Ensure timely preparation and submission of RA bills, variation bills, and final bills.
- Track client certifications and approval cycles.
- Maintain receivables ageing and WIP ageing.
- Drive follow-ups for collections in coordination with CMD and project teams.
- Enforce billing rigor to achieve billing lag 30 days.
4. WIP & Revenue Recognition
- Maintain accurate Work-in-Progress (WIP) records project-wise.
- Ensure proper revenue recognition as per contract terms.
- Reconcile site progress, billing, and accounting WIP.
- Highlight stagnant or aging WIP requiring CMD intervention.
5. Banking, Funding & CMD Support
- Coordinate directly with banks for routine operations, LC/BG documentation, and limits tracking.
- Monitor fund utilization, repayments, and interest costs.
- Prepare financial data and summaries required for CMD-level discussions with banks and clients.
- Act as CMD's point of reference for financial implications of business decisions.
6. Compliance & Statutory Oversight
- Ensure timely compliance with GST, TDS, PF, ESI, and other statutory requirements (with consultants where applicable).
- Prepare data and schedules for audits (statutory, GST, internal).
- Maintain clean, auditable books at all times.
7. MIS, Reporting & Decision Support to CMD
- Prepare clear, concise monthly MIS for CMD, including:
- Cash flow summary
- Project-wise P&L
- Receivables & WIP ageing
- Billing vs collection status
- Translate numbers into actionable insights, not just reports.
- Support CMD with ad-hoc financial analysis for bids, negotiations, or expansion decisions.
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
- Cash-in vs Cash-out variance
- Billing lag (Target: < 30 days)
- Receivables ageing reduction
- WIP ageing and conversion to billing
- Accuracy and timeliness of financial reporting
- CMD confidence in financial visibility
Authority & Decision Rights
- Can flag and escalate delayed billing, collections, or cost overruns directly to CMD.
- Can hold back payments where billing or approvals are non-compliant (with CMD awareness).
- Can recommend corrective actions to protect cash flow and margins.
Qualifications & Experience
- B.Com / M.Com / CA Inter (CA preferred but not mandatory).
- 58 years of experience in construction / MEP / EPC / contracting.
- Strong hands-on experience in project accounting, billing, and collections.
- Working knowledge of GST, TDS, contract accounting.
- Comfortable dealing with banks, auditors, and senior management.
