About Origin Medical Research Lab

Origin Medical Research Lab is the research arm of Origin Medical. Here, we strive to bring together the best and brightest minds at the intersection of AI and healthcare to fulfil Origin Medical's mission.

By combining the knowledge of healthcare and AI, it is on a journey to build state-of-the-art solutions aimed at supporting a broad spectrum of healthcare providers in rural and urban communities, allowing them to practice at the top of their licenses. With AI in the imaging workflow, clinicians can more confidently deliver timely interventions, enhance pregnancy outcomes, identify high-risk pregnancies to reduce maternal mortality, and significantly lower infant mortality rates.

Origin Medical, headquartered in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA, is driven by a mission to advance maternal health equity by improving access to quality prenatal care with artificial intelligence.

About the AI Research Team and the Role

Origin Medical's flagship product is powered by our cutting-edge deep-learning algorithms for medical image recognition. As anEngineering Manager (AI Research), you will be responsible for leading, coordinating, and scaling the operational backbone of our AI research and engineering organisation. This is a high-impact role at the intersection of people leadership, technical program execution, and AI research operations. You will work side-by-side with Research Scientists, Research Engineers, Data Engineers, and Product partners to ensure our AI programs from early-stage experimentation to production model deployments are delivered with rigour, clarity, and speed. You will champion responsible AI practices, manage infrastructure resources, and drive the continuous improvement of our research delivery processes.

What will you do

Program & Research Leadership

  • Support engineering leads in planning and executing multi-quarter AI research programs
  • Partner with Research, Engineering, Data, and Product teams to define and refine goals, milestones, and success metrics for AI experiments, model training runs, and deployments
  • Help organise experiment lifecycles including offline/online evaluations and quality gates to support go/no-go decisions for model launches
  • Translate ambiguous research objectives into clear, trackable workstreams with measurable outcomes

Research Workflow Coordination

  • Coordinate end-to-end research workflows, including experimentation, evaluation, and integration into production systems
  • Facilitate scheduling and tracking of compute-intensive research runs; manage infrastructure requests in coordination with platform and infra teams
  • Oversee experiment metadata management and ensure reproducibility standards are followed across research projects

Stakeholder Communication & Governance

  • Prepare and deliver clear, concise status updates and dashboards
  • Maintain comprehensive program artefacts, including timelines, risk/issue logs, decision records, and lightweight documentation for multiple concurrent AI research projects
  • Identify, escalate, and participate in mitigating cross-team dependencies, technical risks, and delivery bottlenecks

Infrastructure & Resource Management

  • Serve as the point of contact for compute and cloud resource governance including experiment scheduling, tracking run costs, and approving small-scale infrastructure requests (e.g., EC2 instances, GPU allocations)
  • Manage and oversee the team's SaaS tooling portfolio including approvals, renewals, license tracking, and cost monitoring across research tools and platforms
  • Partner with Finance and IT to ensure infrastructure spend stays within approved budgets
  • Process & Operational Excellence
  • Build and maintain processes for documentation, experiment tracking, reproducibility, and model governance that balance research agility with operational rigour
  • Lead retrospectives and drive continuous improvement efforts to increase AI delivery efficiency, data quality, and model reliability

Responsible AI

  • Track and embed safety, privacy, security, and fairness considerations across all projects you support
  • Ensure team practices align with the organisation's responsible and ethical AI principles throughout the research and deployment lifecycle

Who are we looking for

Must Haves:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Data Science, or a related technical field.
  • 5-9 years of experience in engineering management, technical program management, or a senior technical lead role- with at least 2 years in an AI/ML or data-driven environment.
  • Strong understanding of ML/AI research workflows- including model training, experiment design, evaluation frameworks, and production deployment.
  • Demonstrated experience managing cross-functional teams and driving delivery across Research, Engineering, Data, and Product partners.
  • Hands-on familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP) and managing compute/infrastructure resources for ML workloads.
  • Experience maintaining program governance artefacts: timelines, risk logs, decision records, and status dashboards.
  • Strong communication skills- able to translate technical complexity for executive and business stakeholders.

Good to Have:

  • Experience with MLOps tooling- experiment tracking (MLflow, Weights & Biases), model registries, data versioning (DVC), or orchestration (Airflow, Kubeflow)
  • Familiarity with responsible AI frameworks- bias/fairness evaluation, model cards, safety red-teaming
  • Exposure to regulated domains (healthcare AI, financial ML, safety-critical AI systems) and associated governance constraints
  • Experience managing SaaS procurement and cost governance for engineering or research teams
  • PMP, PMI-ACP, or equivalent certification is a plus
