Job Description

About Origin

Origin (previously 10xConstruction) is building general-purpose autonomous robots for US construction to tackle rising costs, safety risks, and labour shortages. Our modular, multi-trade platform combines purpose-built hardware with real-time site intelligence to navigate complex environments and execute tasks with precision. Trained in high-fidelity simulation and already deployed on live sites, our robots deliver 5x faster execution, 250%+ margin expansion, and significant cost savings. Join India's most talent-dense robotics team consisting of individuals from IITs, Stanford, UCLA, etc.

About The Role

As a Mechanical Engineer- Enclosures and Harness, you are the core execution engine of the packaging team. You will spend your days turning abstract layouts into detailed CAD, generating precision sheet metal drawings, and physically routing cables on the robot. You will bridge the gap between the electrical team's schematics and the physical reality of a rugged, moving robot.

Key Responsibilities

CAD Design & Drafting:

  • Design sheet metal chassis, custom heat sinks, and protective shrouds in SolidWorks
  • Route electrical cables, pneumatic hoses, and sensor lines in 3D CAD to ensure no interference with moving parts
  • Create detailed, manufacturing-ready 2D drawings for sheet metal parts (including flat patterns) and wire harness assembly drawings

Prototyping & Fabrication:

  • Build physical prototypes of enclosures using laser cutters, press brakes, and 3D printers
  • Work hands-on in the lab to build prototype wire harnessescutting, stripping, crimping, and looming complex multi-conductor cables
  • Assemble electromechanical enclosures, applying thermal paste, mounting PCBs, and torquing sealed connectors

Testing & Iteration:

  • Execute IP rating validation tests (e.g., pressurized water spray, dust chambers) and document leak points
  • Instrument prototype robots with thermocouples to validate thermal models against real-world operation

Requirements

Required Qualifications and Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field
  • 2-4 years of professional experience in mechanical packaging, product design, or harnessing
  • Strong proficiency in Onshape or Equivalent (Sheet Metal and Routing add-ins preferred)
  • Solid understanding of standard manufacturing processes (sheet metal bending, CNC milling, injection molding)
  • Practical knowledge of electrical connectors, wire gauges, and crimping tools
  • Exceptional hands-on skills: You should be completely comfortable in a mechanical workshop and with basic soldering/crimping

Preferred Experiences

  • Experience designing active air-cooling systems (fans, ducts)
  • Background in designing rugged consumer electronics or industrial hardware

Benefits

  • Gain experience in a dynamic startup environment at the forefront of robotics and AI innovation
  • Contribute to the development of technology that will revolutionize the construction industry
  • Work alongside a talented and passionate team committed to making a real-world impact
  • Learn from experienced professionals and gain valuable skills in robotics software engineering
  • Gain practical experience in a real-world engineering environment
  • Contribute to a project with the potential to make a significant impact on the construction industry
