What Your Role Entails
The EMI/EMC Specialist will be responsible for ensuring that all HVAC productsVRF systems, Chillers, Heat Pumps, IDUs/ODUs, motor drives, and inverter-based control systemsmeet global electromagnetic compliance standards. The role includes designing for EMC, conducting pre-compliance testing, debugging EMI/EMC issues, coordinating certification, and supporting electronics and mechanical teams to implement corrective measures.
What You'll Do:
EMI/EMC-Compliant Product Releases
- Ensure all HVAC products (VRF ODU/IDU, Chillers, Heat Pumps, Inverter Drives) achieve first-time-pass or minimal iteration passes in EMI/EMC certification tests.
- Deliver fully compliant products as per CE/UL/BIS/IEC requirements.
Pre-Compliance Testing & Diagnostic Reports
- Complete comprehensive pre-compliance tests for all proto units.
- Provide RCA-based diagnostic reports including:
- Emission sources
- Noise coupling paths
- Proposed mitigation actions
- Clearly document frequency spectrum findings and design improvement plans.
EMI/EMC Design Guidelines & Checklists
- Create and maintain standardized design guidelines for:
- PCB layout
- Grounding and shielding
- Harness routing
- Control box layout
- Inverter drive noise mitigation
- Publish design checklists for all electronics and electrical teams.
Design Review Outputs
- Provide EMI/EMC review comments on every:
- New PCB
- Power module/inverter board
- Control box design
- Harness and connector layout
- Ensure the design follows EMC best practices before proto release.
Mitigation Implementation & Verification
- Deliver validated mitigation solutions such as:
- Filters, ferrite selection
- PCB layout modifications
- Shielding improvements
- Firmware modifications - spread spectrum, PWM tuning.
- Harness rerouting and grounding corrections
- Verify improvements through re-testing and final reports.
Certification Coordination & Documentation
- Prepare all documentation for certification:
- Test plans
- Test reports
- TCF (Technical Construction Files)
- Compliance matrix
- Coordinate with 3rd-party labs to ensure smooth certification and minimal retesting cost.
EMI/EMC Risk Assessment
- Identify EMI risk early in the project cycle.
- Deliver risk assessment documents for Controller, Inverter Drives, and complete HVAC units.
- Provide mitigation plans for high-risk components and layouts.
Field Issue Resolution
- Provide EMI/EMC analysis for field failures such as:
- Sensor instability
- Communication failures (RS485/CAN noise issues)
- Controller resets / inverter abnormal trips
- Deliver actionable solutions and preventive measures for future designs.
Your success is grounded in
- B.Tech/M.Tech in Electronics/Electrical Engg with minimum 8 years of experience.
EMI/EMC Fundamentals & Standards
- Deep understanding of electromagnetic emission and immunity fundamentals.
- Expertise in international EMC standards applicable to HVAC/inverter products:
- CISPR 11, CISPR 14-1, CISPR 14-2
- IEC 61000-4 series (ESD, EFT/Burst, Surge, Conducted Immunity, Radiated Immunity)
- IEC 61000-3-2/3-3 (Harmonics & Flicker)
- UL, CE, ETL, BIS compliance frameworks
Power Electronics & Inverter Knowledge
- Strong understanding of:
- High-frequency switching (IGBT/MOSFET)
- PWM generation and switching harmonics
- Common-mode and differential-mode noise
- Inverter noise coupling into motors, harnesses, and sensors
- Knowledge of BLDC/FOC motor control and switching topology impacts on EMI.
- Experience reviewing PCBs for power boards, controllers, and SMPS.
System-Level EMC Expertise - HVAC products
- Understanding of EMI impacts on:
- Compressor drives , Fan inverters , Communication lines (RS485, CAN, Modbus)
- Sensors (NTC, pressure sensors, flow sensors) , Control PCBs & SMPS
- Expertise in designing control boxes with proper shielding and grounding.
- Understanding interactions between:
- Harness layout . Power lines , Controller location , Metal enclosure/earth grounding
Pre-Compliance Testing Skills
- Hands-on use of EMI/EMC lab equipment:
- Spectrum analyzers , EMI receivers , LISN , Near-field probes , Oscilloscopes for analyzing HF noise , ESD/EFT/Surge generators , Radiated emission setups (chambers/antennas).
- Ability to Run pre-compliance tests , Identify emission peaks, root causes, and coupling paths
- Suggest immediate and long-term design fixes
EMI/EMC Debugging & Mitigation
- Expertise in isolating noise sources using:
- Current probes
- Magnetic/electric near-field probes
- Time-domain and frequency-domain analysis
- Implementing solutions:
- Filter design (CM/DM filters)
- Shielding and grounding improvements
- Layout corrections
- Harness rerouting
- Snubber circuit implementation
- Firmware-based mitigation (spread spectrum, switching frequency modulations)
HVAC Product Knowledge
- Understanding of electrical architecture of:
- VRF outdoor and indoor units
- Chillers (air-cooled and water-cooled)
- Heat pumps
Compliance Documentation & Certification
- EMC test reports
- Risk analysis
- Technical construction files
- Design justification documents
- Coordinating with certified labs for formal testing.
