The Duty Medical Officer is responsible for providing round-the-clock medical coverage, monitoring inpatient care, supporting emergency and ward activities, and ensuring continuity of clinical services in coordination with consultants and nursing teams.
Key Responsibilities
Patient Care & Clinical Duties
- Provide initial assessment and management of patients in wards, ER, ICU, and OPD (as applicable).
- Monitor patient vitals, progress, treatment response, and update medical records regularly.
- Carry out treatment orders given by consultants and ensure timely execution by nursing staff.
- Perform basic procedures such as IV insertions, NG tube placement, catheterization, ABG sampling, suturing, CPR, etc.
- Attend Code Blue/Red and all medical emergencies promptly.
Coordination & Communication
- Communicate changes in patient condition to consultants in a timely manner.
- Ensure smooth coordination between nursing staff, paramedics, and other support departments.
- Assist consultants during rounds, procedures, and patient management.
Documentation & Compliance
- Maintain accurate and complete patient case sheets, consent forms, progress notes, and discharge summaries (as instructed).
- Ensure proper documentation and compliance with hospital protocols and NABH standards.
- Report any incidents or unusual occurrences to the Medical Superintendent.
Emergency Duties
- Provide emergency care, stabilize critically ill patients, and prepare them for further management.
- Coordinate patient admissions, transfers, and referral processes.
Other Responsibilities
- Ensure infection control practices and patient safety guidelines are followed.
- Oversee smooth functioning of clinical areas during duty hours.
