Purpose of the role
The Drafting Assistant supports the Legal Research and Drafting Coordination team by preparing structured, accurate, and well-formatted legal documents based on instructions and source materials provided.
The role is administrative and document focused in nature. It does not involve legal advice, legal strategy, or client communication. All drafting outputs are reviewed and approved by Australian qualified lawyers or authorised executives prior to any use.
Responsibilities and duties
Document formatting and assembly
- Draft submissions, statements, and correspondence using approved templates and internal style guides
- Insert headers, internal references, annexures, footnotes, and exhibit labels as instructed
- Apply consistent formatting across documents to meet internal quality standards
- Maintain strict version control across draft revisions
Factual summaries and references
- Summarise client provided materials into structured timelines or factual inputs
- Prepare exhibit indexes, factual tables, and reference summaries
- Identify missing information, inconsistencies, or formatting gaps and flag them for review
Document management
- Organise source materials and attachments into structured document bundles
- Apply internal file naming conventions and storage protocols
- Track document changes and updates across collaborative drafting workflows
Team support
- Support Legal Research and Drafting Coordination on delegated drafting and formatting tasks
- Incorporate feedback accurately and promptly
- Participate in internal drafting reviews and skills development sessions
Additional duties
- Assist with maintaining internal style guides, formatting checklists, and document templates
- Undertake other document focused support tasks as required
Key deliverables
- Drafts formatted and ready for Australian legal review
- Document bundles complete with annexures, references, and standard formatting
- Factual timelines and summaries aligned with internal drafting standards
- Accurate version control and document tracking maintained
Compliance and confidentiality
- All work must be completed using approved systems including Google Workspace and designated shared drives
- All client facing materials must be reviewed and approved by a qualified lawyer or authorised executive
- Drafting Assistants must not provide legal advice or independent legal commentary
- Client records and internal documents must be stored securely and handled confidentially

- High attention to detail in document formatting and structure
- Ability to produce clear, accurate factual summaries from source material
- Strong written English and professional document presentation skills
- Ability to follow instructions precisely and integrate feedback
- Comfort working within structured workflows and deadlines
- Basic familiarity with collaborative document platforms
Qualifications and experience
- Bachelor's degree in Law, Administration, or a related field
- One to two years of experience in legal documentation, drafting support, or administrative roles
- Prior exposure to structured document preparation or legal formatting is preferred
