The Role - Director - Backend Engineer/Architect

The Team:

We are looking for a highly motivated, enthusiastic, and skilled engineering leader for S&P Global Energy. We strive to deliver solutions that are sector-specific, data-rich, and hyper-targeted for evolving business needs.

The Impact:
S&P Global Energy is seeking a Senior Lead Software Engineer to provide technical leadership for all stages of software design, development, and maintenance for data processing applications. This person would be part of a development team that manages and supports the internal applications that support Horizon business datasets. This role requires a candidate to handle data processing and develop applications for big data. We have teams composed of individuals who learn to work effectively together while collaborating with the larger group of developers on our platform.

Responsibilities

  • Provides leadership in the execution and delivery of technology solutions to support business applications.

  • This includes leading and coordinating activities throughout development, ensuring the appropriate use of standard models and software packages, as well as standard methods of integration, and developing common application services.

  • Ensure that the best development processes and technologies are used in the design, construction, and implementation of applications.

  • Ensures the timely delivery of the application development projects without compromising the quality and performance of the system

Basic Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field (or equivalent practical experience).
  • 15+ yearsof hands-on software development experience, including5+ yearsin backend architecture roles.
  • Demonstratedtechnical leadershipexperience: mentoring engineers, guiding design, and driving architectural decisions.
  • Expert proficiency inC# and .NET (Core or modern equivalent), or comparable object-oriented backend technologies.
  • Deep understanding ofmicroservices,RESTful API design, anddistributed systems.
  • Advanced SQL skills, includingdatabase performance tuningfor large-scale datasets.
  • Strong experience withrelational and non-relational databases, including schema design, indexing strategies, and scalability patterns.
  • Knowledge ofbig data and large-scale data processing ecosystems, including distributed compute and ETL/ELT concepts (without requiring specific open-source frameworks).
  • Experience withmajor cloud platforms(AWS, Azure, and/or GCP), including cloud-native service design.
  • Strong experience withcontainerization, orchestration, and automated build/release pipelines.
  • Expertise in application design and code reviews, with focus onscalability, security, resiliency, and performance.
  • Strong understanding ofTDD/BDD,SOLID principles, and modern software engineering best practices.
  • Proficiency inscripting/automationfor system integration and operational workflows.
  • Strong cross-functional collaboration with Product, Design, and Business stakeholders to align technical execution with business outcomes.
  • Ability to make sound architectural trade-offs and drivetechnical strategy.
  • Exposure toAI/ML or predictive analyticsin backend systems is a plus

Additional Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience integratingLLM-powered capabilitiesviamanaged enterprise AI platforms(e.g., Amazon Bedrock, Azure OpenAI Service, or Google Gemini).
  • Hands-on experience designing and operatingcloud-native container and orchestrationenvironments at scale.
  • Proven track record implementingCI/CDandinfrastructure-as-codepractices in production.
  • Experience buildingdata ingestion, transformation, and orchestration workflowsusing managed cloud services.
