Design engineer - Transmission Line

Execute end-to-end detailed transmission line engineering from an Owner's Engineer and Detailed Design perspective, covering electrical, structural and civil engineering inputs for EHV / UHV transmission line projects.

Perform comprehensive transmission line design using PLS-CADD, including survey and profile validation, terrain modelling, tower spotting, span optimisation, sagtension analysis and electrical clearance verification under governing load cases.

Define and apply design criteria, load cases and reliability conditions in compliance with national and international standards such as IS 802, IS 875, CEA Regulations, IEC 60826, utility specifications and lender requirements.

Carry out and coordinate tower and pole structural analysis and member design using PLS-Tower and PLS-Pole, including suspension, tension, angle, dead-end and special structures, ensuring structural adequacy, constructability and optimisation.

Perform and review foundation design and civil structural engineering, including interpretation of geotechnical data, foundation type selection, load extraction from PLS-Tower / PLS-Pole, and preparation or review of foundation calculations and drawings.

Define conductor, ground wire and OPGW parameters, including stringing conditions, ruling spans and construction constraints, aligned with electrical performance, structural safety and site realities.

Prepare and review complete engineering deliverables, including plan & profile drawings, tower and foundation schedules, stringing charts, civil and structural drawings, design calculation notes and technical design reports.

Act as an Owner's Engineer by reviewing EPC contractor designs, validating assumptions, checking compliance with approved criteria, identifying gaps or risks and issuing technical comments and resolutions.

Ensure full compliance of designs with client specifications, utility standards, international codes and lender technical requirements, and support technical audits and independent engineer reviews.

Maintain strict design governance, including document control, revision management, traceability of assumptions, and closure of review comments across multiple stakeholders.

Provide engineering support during execution, including tower and pole erection, foundation construction, stringing and sagging activities, resolution of site deviations, and preparation of revised and as-built drawings.

Evaluate and propose technical optimisation opportunities, including span optimisation, tower and foundation rationalisation, material optimisation and constructability improvements without compromising safety or compliance.

Coordinate effectively with survey, geotechnical, hydrology, construction and project management teams, ensuring seamless interface between design and execution.

Support tendering and pre-engineering activities by reviewing technical scopes, defining design assumptions, estimating engineering effort and identifying technical and execution risks.

Contribute to standardisation, automation and productivity improvement initiatives, including development of standard design templates, calculation formats, checklists and efficient PLS workflows.

Requirements

Technical & Software Skills
- Strong hands-on experience in PLS-CADD for transmission line design.
- Sound understanding of:
oTransmission line load cases
oTower configurations and functions
oSag-tension behaviour and clearance requirements
- Working knowledge of PLS CAD / PLS-Tower / PLS-Pole / STAAD
- Familiarity with AutoCAD for drawing preparation.

Automation & Productivity Skills
- Ability to use automation and standardisation techniques to improve efficiency and consistency in transmission line design and drafting workflows.
- Working knowledge of PLS-CADD and AutoCAD productivity features, including standard templates, reusable configurations, block libraries, scripts and macros.
- Experience in managing large corridor-based datasets and multiple design iterations while maintaining drawing discipline and revision control.
- Capability to identify repetitive tasks and support continuous improvement and workflow optimisation within the TL engineering team.
