We are seeking an experienced Senior Database Support Engineer with deep expertise in managing and optimizing AWS-hosted database environments. The engineer will play a critical role in ensuring the reliability, performance, and security of Availity's global database estate, supporting a 24/7 follow-the-sun operational model. This position involves working on a highly collaborative and high-performing team that supports mission-critical healthcare applications hosted on AWS, driving automation, compliance, and continuous improvement to make data more resilient, scalable, and actionable for downstream clinical and analytical purposes.

Roles & Responsibilities

Availity is transitioning from an Oracle-centric, physical data centre model to a modern AWS ecosystem with a follow-the-sun support strategy across Availity US and Availity India. This role demands cloud-native database expertise, automation skills, and strong operational support capabilities to ensure high availability, performance, and security for mission-critical healthcare data.

What You Will Be Doing

  • Database Operations: Manage AWS RDS instances (Aurora PostgreSQL, Aurora MySQL, Oracle), DocumentDB, DynamoDB, and ElastiCache at scale.
  • Reliability & Recovery: Implement and maintain robust backup, recovery, and disaster recovery strategies.
  • Performance Optimization: Tune queries, optimise indexing, and troubleshoot complex performance issues.
  • Automation: Develop and maintain automation scripts using Terraform, CloudFormation, and Ansible.
  • CI/CD Integration: Embed database operations into CI/CD pipelines (GitLab or similar).
  • Security & Compliance: Enforce IAM roles, encryption, audit logging, and compliance with regulatory standards (HIPAA, GDPR).
  • Global Collaboration: Participate in follow-the-sun handoff processes for 24/7 coverage and work closely with US counterparts.
  • Documentation: Create and maintain operational runbooks, SOPs, and knowledge-sharing artefacts.
  • Incident Management: Lead root cause analysis and resolution for critical incidents in a 24/7 environment.
  • Continuous Improvement: Evaluate new AWS features and database technologies to drive innovation.

Experience

  • 5+ years in database administration; 3+ years in AWS database services.
  • Hands-on experience with AWS RDS, Aurora, DynamoDB, DocumentDB, and ElastiCache.

Technical Skills

  • Strong scripting skills (Python preferred; Bash/PowerShell acceptable).
  • Familiarity with Kubernetes (EKS) and containerised deployments.
  • Knowledge of monitoring tools (CloudWatch, NewRelic, Splunk, Prometheus, Grafana).
  • Expertise in backup/recovery, disaster recovery planning, and high availability.
  • Certifications: AWS Database Specialty or Solutions Architect certification preferred.
  • Communication: Excellent collaboration skills for cross-time-zone team.

You Will Set Yourself Apart

  • Experience with multi-region architectures and global failover strategies.
  • Hands-on work with serverless databases (Aurora Serverless, DynamoDB Streams).
  • Knowledge of observability practices (logs, metrics, tracing).
  • Familiarity with ITIL processes or similar frameworks for change and incident management.
  • Proven ability in incident management and root cause analysis in a 24/7 setting.
  • Skills in AWS cost optimization and capacity planning for large-scale workloads.
  • Advanced understanding of data encryption at rest and in transit.
  • Knowledge of healthcare compliance standards (HIPAA, GDPR).
  • Ability to mentor junior engineers and enforce best practices.
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making under pressure.
  • Contribution to automation and DevOps culture beyond day-to-day operations.
  • Experience working with distributed teams and strong documentation habits.

Eligibility

Must Have

  • 3-8 years in database administration; 3+ years in AWS database services.
  • Hands-on experience with AWS RDS, Amazon RDS, Aurora, Postgres SQL, DynamoDB/DocumentDB/ ElastiCache.
  • Strong scripting skills (Python preferred; Bash/PowerShell acceptable).

Nice To Have

  • Familiarity with DevOps principles and CI/CD integration.
  • Experience with monitoring tools (CloudWatch, Datadog, or similar).
  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, CloudFormation).

Video Camera Usage

As a remote first company, we are also camera-first and provide all associates with camera/video capability to simulate the office environment. The usage of cameras also enhances security and protects sensitive company information.
