Role Overview
We are seeking an experienced Database Architect to join our architecture team during a critical growth phase. As a startup transitioning from ad-hoc data management to a centralized, scalable data infrastructure, this role will be instrumental in designing and implementing our data lake, establishing data governance frameworks, and optimizing our database systems for performance and security.
Required Qualifications
ABSOLUTE MUST-HAVES:
- PostgreSQL on Azure - Hands-on experience managing and optimizing PostgreSQL databases on Azure cloud
- NoSQL Expertise - Solid, hands-on experience with at least one NoSQL database (MongoDB, DocumentDB, Elasticsearch, Neo4j, Cassandra, etc.) - preferably on Azure, but any cloud acceptable. Depth of expertise matters more than breadth.
- System Architecture & Data Design - Proven ability to architect systems and design comprehensive data models
Other Required Skills:
- 7+ years of experience in database management and administration
- Data Migration Experience - Must have successfully executed data migrations between platforms
- Large-Scale Data Experience - Proven experience working with large, complex datasets and high-traffic database systems
- Strong understanding of data modelling principles and best practices
- Proficiency in database design tools and query optimization techniques
- Experience with database backup and recovery, high availability, and disaster recovery solutions
- Knowledge of database security practices and regulatory compliance requirements
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field
- Certification in database technologies (e.g., Oracle DBA, Microsoft SQL Server, MongoDB, Azure certifications)
- Experience with data lake implementations or data centralization projects
- Experience with Change Data Capture implementations
- Knowledge of big data technologies and frameworks (e.g., Hadoop, Spark)
- Familiarity with DevOps practices and tools (e.g., CI/CD, Terraform, Ansible)
- Startup culture experience - has worked in at least 1-2 startup environments
- Domain experience in insurance or finance/fintech industries
What you would do in next 1 year
- Successfully contribute to building our centralized data lake - moving from scattered datasets to unified architecture
- Establish data governance frameworks including data dictionary, security guidelines, and access control systems
- Deliver on 3+ strategic data initiatives currently in pipeline
- Optimize existing database performance through schema redesign and query optimization
- Enable data accessibility for compliance and business teams through proper access management
