Role Description

As a Database Infrastructure Engineer, you will be a key member of the myKaarma Data Team, responsible for the reliability, performance, and scaling of our data platforms. Your primary mission is to manage and optimize our ElasticSearch, Redis, MySQL, and MongoDB clusters and support our growing vector database infrastructure, ensuring they meet the high-scale demands of our search and AI-driven features.

You will work closely with Senior Engineers and Architects to implement the data backbone for AI initiatives. This role is perfect for an engineer who is passionate about distributed systems, enjoys the nuts and bolts of database tuning, and is committed to Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) to automate routine operations.

To succeed in this role, you should know how distributed search engines and databases work, such as ElasticSearch, MongoDB, and MariaDB (including sharding and indexing strategies), possess a strong command of Linux systems and networking, and be proficient in Infrastructure-as-Code tools like Terraform or Ansible to automate the lifecycle of MySQL, MongoDB, and emerging vector stores.

The ideal candidate will be a proactive problem-solver who excels at translating architectural designs into scalable infrastructure, demonstrates a monitor-everything mindset to ensure high availability, and thrives on fine-tuning database performance to support the rapid demands of AI-driven search features.

Responsibilities

  • Automate the provisioning, scaling, monitoring, and configuration of MySQL, MongoDB, ElasticSearch, and Redis using Terraform and Ansible.
  • Participate in a 24/7 on-call rotation to monitor and support all caching and storage layers, taking ownership of alerts to resolve immediate incidents and proactively prevent future disruptions where possible.
  • Monitor and tune database and caching performance (indexing, query optimization, and sharding) using tools like Prometheus/Grafana, Percona Toolkit, and CloudWatch Insights for EC2, RDS, and Aurora.
  • Execute, validate, and maintain documentation for critical maintenance taskssuch as backups and upgrades.
  • Automated Infrastructure: Develop and refine a Schema-as-Code system to automate the deployment, versioning, and migration of database schemas across MySQL, MongoDB, and ElasticSearch.
  • Act as a technical resource for application developers, guiding query optimization and schema design to ensure efficient database utilization.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a relevant field.
  • 3-5 years of experience in a Database, SRE, or similar role.
  • Experienced in Ansible and shell scripting (Python/sh) to automate database infrastructure and other repetitive operational tasks.
  • Experience building dashboards and alerts using Prometheus, Grafana, and AWS CloudWatch to monitor database performance and look for anomalies.
  • Operational discipline and rigor with written follow-up (e.g., tickets, documentation).
  • Ability to participate in a 24/7 on-call rotation and remain methodical during production incidents.
  • Strong hands-on experience managing and tuning ElasticSearch and/or Redis
  • Strong hands-on experience managing and tuning MongoDB and/or MySQL
