Cloud Engineering within Group Digital provides build and run capabilities for enterprise cloud platforms. This includes platform automation, DevOps tooling, CI/CD enablement, security baseline implementation, and operational support across Azure, AWS, and Google Cloud.
In addition to platform engineering capabilities, the team maintains a number of internally developed applications and automation tools that support both platform operations and selected business services.
These applications provide operational capabilities, reporting, integrations, and workflow automation used by engineering teams and business stakeholders across the Firm.

The Custom Development capability supports both platform teams and business services by developing and maintaining internally built applications that enable operational processes, data visibility, and integration across technology platforms.
Job Description
The Team
The role sits within the Cloud Engineering / Custom Apps team in Group Digital and supports the development and operation of internally developed applications used by both platform teams and business services.
These applications provide operational tooling, reporting dashboards, automation capabilities, and integration services across the cloud engineering environment and selected business workflows.
The team works closely with platform engineers, service owners, and business stakeholders to ensure that custom applications remain reliable, secure, and aligned with operational needs.
The team operates within a multi-supplier delivery model supporting both application development and operational support.
The Role
The Custom Development Lead is responsible for leading the development, maintenance, and operational support of internally developed applications supporting cloud engineering platforms and selected business services.
The role provides technical leadership while remaining actively involved in application development, troubleshooting, and operational support.
The role focuses on ensuring that custom applications remain reliable, maintainable, and aligned with evolving platform and business service requirements.
The position supports both the ongoing operation of existing applications and the development of enhancements or new capabilities where automation, integration, or reporting improvements are required.
Responsibilities
- Lead the development and operational support of internally developed applications supporting platform teams and business services
- Maintain and enhance custom applications built using technologies such as Python, Node.js, SQL, and web-based application frameworks
- Develop and maintain dashboards and reporting solutions using Power BI and related data platforms
- Support integration between custom applications and enterprise platforms including cloud services, DevOps tooling, and operational data sources
- Ensure reliability and operational stability of applications used by engineering teams and business stakeholders
- Provide technical leadership within the custom development capability and guide development practices
- Support troubleshooting and incident response for issues affecting internally developed applications
- Work with service owners and business stakeholders to prioritise fixes, enhancements, and improvements
- Maintain documentation, development guidance, and operational runbooks for supported applications
- Ensure custom applications follow secure development practices and enterprise technology standards
- Manage application updates and enhancements through controlled change and release processes
- Collaborate effectively with platform engineering teams, business stakeholders, and suppliers within the multi-supplier operating model
Qualifications
The Person
To be effective in this role, the individual must have:
- Bachelor's degree in computer science, Software Engineering, Information Technology
- 68 years of professional experience in software development or application engineering roles
- 23 years of experience in a technical lead or senior developer capacity, guiding development practices and supporting other engineers
- Experience delivering and maintaining internal enterprise applications, automation tools, or operational platforms used by engineering teams or business functions
- Experience working within controlled enterprise environments with structured change management, release processes, and operational support responsibilities
- Experience working with stakeholders to translate operational or business requirements into application enhancements and solutions
- Strong hands-on experience in software development using languages such as Python or Node.js
- Experience working with SQL databases and data integration patterns
- Experience developing web-based applications or internal operational tools
- Practical experience developing dashboards and reporting solutions using Power BI or similar technologies
- Experience supporting applications used in operational or business service environments
- Ability to provide technical leadership while remaining hands-on with development and troubleshooting
- Understanding of secure development practices and application lifecycle management
- Experience working with engineering teams and business stakeholders to deliver application improvements
- Ability to manage operational issues and prioritise development work based on service impact
- Strong communication and collaboration skills when working across technical teams and business users
Preferred Certifications
- Microsoft Certified: Power BI Data Analyst Associate
- Microsoft Certified: Azure Developer Associate or equivalent cloud development certification
- Certified ScrumMaster (CSM) or similar Agile development certification
