Position Summary
VCC Continuing Studies is seeking an instructor with industry and teaching experience to teach courses for our Technology & Trades program. This is a temporary contract position, and the instructor will be hired on cohort basis. Candidates should possess a strong knowledge in the areas of MS Word, Excel, QuickBooks Level 1, and Introduction to Bookkeeping.
This position is responsible for providing instructional training in an assigned field, with a diverse set of instructional methods and demonstrations. The candidate should be able to effectively communicate and provide appropriate feedback to students (mainly mature adults). The instructor will also ensure proper stewardship of college facilities, equipment and other inventories, and to uphold the College's policies and procedures. The role may involve participating in meetings and events and sitting on committees as required.
The position involves preparing teaching materials, designing learning activities, developing lesson plans/syllabi, and assessing students progress.
Applicants must be available to teach throughout the entire month for each cohort. This comprehensive program provides participants with entry level accounting skills training and introduces them to bookkeeping, and the QuickBooks accounting software. Participants enhance their MS Word and Excel skills, learn to do basic bookkeeping, manage employee records, understanding financial statements, and perform daily administrate accounting tasks.
Successful candidates will be offered a term contract position to teach this 120-hour course/cohort, with opportunities for renewal of instructional assignments.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Utilize industry knowledge to teach and engage students using a diverse and systematic plan of lectures, presentations, demonstrations, discussion groups, simulations, case studies, and independent or group assignments.
- Prepares teaching materials, including multimedia and web-related materials, where appropriate.
- Effectively communicate with students, in a group or individual setting, using both visual techniques and verbal communication.
- Prepares, administers and marks papers, tests, exams and other assessments to monitor and evaluate students progress. Evaluate students progress and provide detailed feedback on student performance.
- Effectively communicate with mature students, in a group or individual setting, using both visual techniques and verbal communication.
- Adhere to VCC policies and procedures, including being available to students, and maintaining confidentiality of students and information.
- Creates a positive learning environment by consistently demonstrating preparedness for class, by motivating students to accomplish educational and personal goals and by providing the opportunity to receive and act on student feedback.
- Performs other related duties as required.
Qualifications
- Minimum Diploma, Bachelor's degree preferred, in a relevant field.
- Minimum three years of current and relevant industry experience.
- Candidates should possess a strong knowledge and experience in teaching MS Word, Excel, QuickBooks Level 1, and Introduction to Bookkeeping.
- Candidates must be proficient in conducting lessons online.
- Demonstrated exceptional communication and interpersonal skills.
- Evidence of commitment to team and personal professional growth.
- Ability to create an inclusive learning atmosphere.
- Teaching experience in a post-secondary education environment is preferred.
- Experience teaching in an online environment is preferred.
- Knowledge or experience with Moodle or other Learning Management System would be an asset.
Salary Range - Prorated based on FTE
$50 to $70 hourly
