Job Role: Composite Design and Manufacturing Engineer

Location: Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, Mumbai

Job Category: Project Research Staff

About the project:

The project aims to develop various types of UAVs. The research involves integrated structural, aerodynamic, and manufacturing design leading up to a functional. This is a hands-on, interdisciplinary RCD project ideal for candidates who are passionate about drones, new propulsion systems, and real-world design challenges.

Qulification and Key Skills Required:

  • MTech / ME / BTech / BE or equivalent degree in Mechanical Engineering, Material Science, Mechatronics, Manufacturing Technology or related field.
  • Solid understanding of fiber properties (strength, stiffness etc.), various resin systems, and their interactions.
  • Minimum 25 years of hands-on experience in composite fabrication, Mold preparation, prototyping, tooling materials and techniques, assembly of complex systems.
  • Proficiency in composite fabrication techniques (Wet Layup, Resin Infusion and VARTM), uses of sandwich core materials, Ply Stacking management
  • A deep understanding of various curing methods (Autoclave, Out of Autoclave, Oven etc.), Post curing process.
  • Familiar with mechanical drawings and CAD modelling tools (SolidWorks/Fusion 360/CATIA-V5).
  • Knowledge of and adherence to safety protocols for handling chemicals, Fibrous Materials and power tools etc.

  • Experience in using hand tools, power tools for post Processing of Composite parts and machinings of Composite parts.
  • Understanding of tolerances, fits, and alignment for composite components.

Job Profile:

  • Translate CAD designs into physical components using appropriate manufacturing methods, ability to Design, create and use mold for complex parts.
  • Perform repairs on damaged composite parts, including scarfing, patching, and bonding.
  • Identify and suggest materials, fasteners, joints, and off-the-shelf parts for mechanical components, Prototypes and Robust assembly.
  • Properly store, cut, and handle different types of carbon fiber and resin systems,
  • Assist in iterative design modifications by collaborating with the design and analysis team.
  • Maintain fabrication logs and ensure proper documentation of build procedures and part lists.
  • Participate in prototype testing and help troubleshoot mechanical issues.
  • Manage composite inventory and coordinate with vendors for part procurement and outsourced machining.
  • Any other work assigned as per requirement.
