Job Description - Compliance Officer – India

Location: Gurugram, India (with regular travel as required)

Reporting line: Group Compliance Officer

Function: Compliance

Role Summary

The Compliance Officer will ensure adherence to relevant laws and regulations as well as the company's Compliance Framework, including fraud and anti-corruption, trade, competition, privacy.

The candidate shall be responsible for setting the strategic direction of the India compliance function and for effectively implementing the compliance framework at regional level. He or she will lead the India global compliance team and ensure consistent, high-quality compliance execution across regions and divisions.

This role has direct accountability for organizational capability building executive-level advisory responsibilities and team leadership. The position works closely with senior leadership and key internal stakeholders to proactively identify, manage and mitigate compliance risks, build organisational compliance capabilities and reinforce a strong culture of integrity.

Key Responsibilities

1. Compliance Program Implementation & Operations

  • Implement and operationalize the Group compliance framework in India, ensuring alignment with local laws, regulatory requirements, and business realities.
  • Translate global compliance policies into practical, workable local processes, tools, and controls.
  • Act as the primary point of contact for compliance matters in India, providing hands‑on support to the business.

2. Regulatory Support

  • Support on compliance‑related legal matters, including regulatory interpretation, risk assessments, and policy implementation.
  • Provide compliance and regulatory input on contracts, commercial arrangements, and third‑party engagements.
  • Conduct contract drafting and reviews together with the legal department regarding compliance matters.

3. Risk Assessment & Mitigation

  • Conduct periodic compliance risk assessments tailored to the Indian operating environment.
  • Identify high‑risk areas and design proportionate mitigation actions.
  • Support internal audits and follow‑up on remediation plans to ensure timely and effective closure.
  • Design, implement, and continuously improve compliance policies, procedures, and operational processes, with a strong emphasis on anti-corruption.

4. Business Partnering

  • Work closely with business leaders to support growth while managing compliance risks.
  • Advise on compliance aspects of commercial activities, including bids, projects, third‑party engagements, and strategic initiatives.
  • Balance risk management with commercial realities in a challenging and fast‑paced environment.
  • Foster strong cross‑functional partnerships to embed compliance into business operations.

5. Third‑Party Compliance

  • Implement and manage third‑party due diligence processes for customers, agents, distributors, suppliers, and other business partners.
  • Support compliance‑related contract reviews in coordination with Legal.
  • Monitor third‑party compliance obligations and address red flags or concerns.

6. Investigations & Reporting

  • Support and conduct internal compliance investigations, including whistleblowing cases, in coordination with Group Compliance and Legal.
  • Ensure investigations are handled consistently, confidentially, and in line with internal standards and local law.
  • Prepare compliance reports and updates for local management and Group Compliance.

7. Training & Culture

  • Deliver tailored compliance training and awareness initiatives adapted to the Indian business context.
  • Promote a strong culture of integrity, accountability, and ethical behavior.
  • Act as a visible and approachable compliance partner for employees.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Law degree required (qualified lawyer preferred).
  • 8–12+ years of experience in compliance, legal, or regulatory roles, preferably in multinational or complex organizations.
  • Strong hands‑on experience with anti‑corruption, fraud, third‑party risk, competition, data protection, and trade compliance.
  • Solid understanding of the Indian legal and regulatory environment.
  • Proven ability to implement processes and controls, not just design policies.
  • Experience operating in challenging, fast‑moving, or less structured environments.
  • Strong business acumen with the ability to engage credibly with senior management.
