A Clinical Nurse Specialist is a registered nurse who has acquired additional specialist knowledge and experience. As well as having completed, or demonstrated the ability to complete, a primary degree they will have the skills and competencies required to manage a caseload within agreed boundaries and protocols in line with clinical governance. Entwined around this clinical core are ties of consultancy, teaching, management and research and its application.
It is recognised that this may be achieved either directly through personal contact with the patient or indirectly through a combination or focus on one of the following: leadership, facilitation, teaching and research / audit. Work within the nursing and multi-professional team to ensure a high standard of care to a defined patient group. Competently perform the necessary technical/invasive/physical aspects of care for this defined patient group. The nurse specialist carries continuing responsibility for the assessment or care needs, the development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care and the setting of standards. Contributes to the service both professionally and managerially which may cross traditional professional or service boundaries. In the context of developing services the post holders requires being flexible and responsive to the needs of all individual clients and the service, supporting management engaged in review, audit and evaluation, as appropriate
Duration, Location, and Working Pattern:
- This is an exciting opportunity to join the west of Scotland Immunology & Anaphylaxis service and to develop as an independent practitioner in a Band 6 Clinical Nurse Specialist role
- The base location for this post is Gartnavel General Hospital
- The successful candidate will be based in South Sector, Greater Glasgow & Clyde, however will have a wider remit and be expected to travel and consult patients across various Sectors/ Health Boards to support the service where required
- The shift pattern for this post is Monday to Friday
- Please note the salary is Pro Rata for part time hours
Key Responsibilities
- Responsibility for providing highly specialised nursing advice and management in the care people with acute, complex and long term immunological disorders and allergy
- Assist with the delivery of antibody replacement home therapy programme to enable self-management of long term conditions
- Alongside the team lead , participate in the development, planning, implementation of evidence based protocols and guidelines
- Manage effectively a caseload of patients. Planning and prioritizing own workload as an autonomous clinician in response to the needs of the Immunology & allergy service
- Nurse Prescribing within specialist requirements
- Delivering care to patients within the day ward and outpatients areas
- Provide guidance to community teams
- Ensure the care given to immune deficiency and allergy patients meets the standards set and identified in clinical practice.
- To provide specialised advice to staff locally and nationally on the care of Immunology & allergy patients
- Extended practice role of Venepuncture and Cannulation
- Take shared responsibility for and work in collaboration with nursing and medical staff to ensure effective and timely discharge from hospital
- Provide counselling, support, information and advice to patients and families with Immunology and allergy conditions
- Act as an expert resource for the clinical management of patients
- Support staff within a range of clinical areas to ensure that the patient needs are assessed, planned, implemented and evaluated and ensure that there is involvement and input of patients and carers
- Manage patient's records within agreed standards, ensuring quality of record keeping is within the NMC code of conduct
- To be aware of and comply with standards in accordance with the NMC Code of Conduct and abide by the statutory rules to practice
- To be aware of and comply with policies, procedures and codes of practice
- To report and record all accidents, incidents and complaints in accordance with the Board policy and take appropriate action

Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job:
- First Level Registered Nurse with a minimum of 5 years post registration experience
- 2 years experience and appropriate post registration qualification/relevant experience
- As appropriate to area of clinical practice successfully complete the agreed training pathway to develop CNS role
- Ability to fulfil criteria outlined in the job description
- NMC qualification as Nurse Prescriber
