What are the roles and responsibilities of a choreographer
Responsibilities
The main role of a choreographer is to create and teach dance routines. They can teach these to students for a musical or to dancers for a movie song. It depends on where they are employed either freelancing in schools, a company or a production house. Some of the basic responsibilities are:
- To design dance routines or add to preexisting dance forms by incorporating new dance styles
- To teach the sequence of steps to dancers either through vocal instructions or by demonstrating to them.
- To choose suitable music to gel with the dance forms
- To organize and supervise auditions before selecting dancers for the performance
- To attend the rehearsals of the program and ensure all the dancers are in sync with each other and in rhythm with the music
- To be up-to-date with the current trends and styles and increase one's knowledge and skills
- To coordinate with directors, producers, musicians, costume designers etc.
