Job Description

The Role

The purpose of this role is to provide a range of diagnostic services to cardiac and non-cardiac sourced patients attending the Cardiac Physiology service, Cardiology Respiratory Hub, Gartnaval General Hospital

The post holder is responsible for assisting in the provision of a professional, highly skilled, efficient, high quality, diagnostic cardiac service

As part of the wider South Sector team, the postholder may be required to work at other hospital sites to provide back fill on an infrequent basis.

Permanent, Part time

Shift Pattern - Monday-Tuesday 0845-16.50, Wednesday-Thursday 0845-1700

Base location - Gartnavel General Hospital

Key Responsibilities

Lead ECG Recording

  • Perform ECGs for inpatients and outpatients in both routine and emergency situations.
  • Identify and escalate acutely abnormal or unexpected ECG findings to medical staff.
  • Work independently, troubleshooting equipment issues and ensuring technically accurate recordings.
  • Prepare patients appropriately, recognise faulty leads, and liaise with Medical Physics when needed.
  • Demonstrate a good level of ECG interpretation and highlight abnormalities to senior staff.

Ambulatory ECG & BP Monitoring

  • Apply 24hour and multiday heart and blood pressure monitors for inpatients and outpatients.
  • Communicate clearly with patients to understand symptoms and ensure correct monitor selection.
  • Emphasise the importance of symptom/activity diaries for accurate diagnosis.
  • Prepare skin and apply electrodes to minimise artefact and ensure highquality data.
  • Select correct BP cuff sizes and explain equipment operation to reduce errors.

Downloading & Initial Analysis

  • Download patient data to the Sentinel system, ensuring correct patient matching.
  • Perform preanalysis and initial scanning of results.
  • Immediately escalate significant arrhythmias or abnormal BP findings to senior staff or cardiologists.

Exercise Tolerance Testing

  • Assist senior staff during stress tests.
  • Prepare skin, apply electrodes and BP monitors, enter patient demographics, and explain procedures.

Echocardiography Support

  • Assist in the echo room when required, including transferring patients and preparing monitoring equipment.
  • Enter patient details, access EchoPac, update Trackcare, and coordinate with medical staff.

Departmental & Administrative Duties

  • Use Trackcare daily to manage workload and support patient enquiries.
  • Assist primary care and mental health teams with ECG bookings and general queries.
  • Download ECGs from hospital machines into MUSE and ensure accurate patient demographics.
  • Carry and respond to pager calls, prioritising workload appropriately.
  • Maintain stock levels, rotate supplies, and ensure correct storage.
  • Clean equipment and rooms following infection control procedures.

Equipment & Technical Competence

  • Operate, calibrate, clean, maintain, and troubleshoot all relevant cardiology equipment to ensure safe and accurate data collection.

Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job:

Essential

  • SCST Certificate in Electrocardiography or equivalent level of knowledge [broadly SCQF level 7]. This would include ECG recording technique and ECG interpretation.
  • Standard Grade English, Maths and Science, or equivalent
  • Basic IT skills, to include use of Microsoft Word and Outlook
  • Experience of working in healthcare in a clinical role; for example as a Clinical Support Worker
  • Empathetic and compassionate
  • Accuracy and attention to detail
  • Good team player and able to manage working relationships
  • Able to work unsupervised, whilst recognising own limitations
  • Good verbal communication skills; evidence of skills in supporting those who are distressed, anxious or vulnerable
  • Professional attitude and work ethic

Desirable

  • Willing to undertake SCST certificate in ECG if not already held
  • Previous experience of using a Hospital Information System such as TRAK
  • Previous data-entry experience

From 1 April 2026, the Agenda for Change full-time working week will reduce from 37 hours to 36 hours. Part-time working hours will be reduced on a pro-rata basis. A corresponding increase in the hourly rate will apply, ensuring that overall pay remains unchanged.
