Job Requirements

Role Overview

The UPI/IMPS Business Analyst will be responsible for endtoend analysis, design, and delivery support for retail payments solutions (UPI, IMPS) across banking channels and switches. The role involves working closely with business, NPCI, operations, technology, and external vendors to translate regulatory and scheme changes into robust, scalable payment application features.

Key Responsibilities

  • Requirements & Solution Design
  • Gather, analyse, and document business requirements for UPI/IMPS and related payment products across mobile, internet, branch, and API channels.
  • Create BRDs, FSDs, user stories, and use cases capturing endtoend flows: payer/payee journey, switching, NPCI messages, reconciliation, chargeback, and dispute processes.
  • Map and optimize current vs. target processes (ASIS/TOBE), including exception handling, timeouts, and reversals for UPI/IMPS transactions.
  • Work with solution and enterprise architects to align designs with core banking, CBS, reconciliation, and Risk and other interfaces.
  • Payments Domain & Scheme Expertise
  • Act as the subject matter expert (SME) for UPI and IMPS, covering PSP/TPAP models, handle/VPA, collect/pay, mandate flows, and NPCI procedural circulars.
  • Interpret NPCI specs, circulars, and regulatory guidelines, and convert them into clear business and system impacts (new message fields, limits, risk rules, compliance timelines).
  • Understand and explain ISO 8583/ISO 20022 message structures for UPI/IMPS, including field usage and mapping to internal data models.
  • Stakeholder & Vendor Management
  • Work with product owners, operations, risk, compliance, and technology teams to prioritise backlog and define MVP scope for UPI/IMPS initiatives.
  • Liaise with NPCI, Payment switches, gateways, and thirdparty vendors for clarifications, change requests, RFP/RFI evaluations, and solution walkthroughs.
  • Conduct requirement workshops, demos, and walkthroughs for internal stakeholders, senior management, and steering committees.
  • Functional Testing & Quality Assurance
  • Define functional acceptance criteria, test scenarios, and edge cases for UPI/IMPS flows (success, failure, timeouts, recon transactions, refunds, retries).
  • Support SIT/UAT by clarifying business rules, validating defects, and signoff on fixes; ensure regression coverage for core payment flows and downstream systems (recon, GL, reporting).
  • Validate performance and resilience requirements (TPS, timeouts, switch failover, duplicate detection, idempotency).
  • Operations, Risk & Compliance Support
  • Design and refine operational processes: L1/L2 issue handling, dispute/chargeback flows, settlement & reconciliation logic, and exception management dashboards.
  • Work with risk and compliance, fraud monitoring rules (velocity checks, device risk, merchant risk), and flags required in transaction data.
  • Ensure adherence to RBI and NPCI regulations, circulars, and audit requirements for UPI/IMPSincluding logs, reports, and traceability.
  • Change Management & GoLive Support
  • Create user guides, SOPs, and training materials for operations, contact centre, and branch/business users.
  • Support cutover planning, production validation, and hypercare post golive, including monitoring key KPIs (success rates, declines, dispute volumes).
  • Contribute to continuous improvement by analysing incident trends, customer feedback, and scheme changes, and proposing product/process enhancements.

Required Experience (5 - 10 Years)

  • Total Experience: 5 10 years in Banking/Fintech, with minimum 45 years in retail payments (UPI, IMPS, AEPS, NEFT/RTGS, cards, wallets).
  • Handson experience with payment switch / gateway / CBS integration for realtime payments.
  • Proven track record of at least 23 endtoend implementations or major change releases in UPI/IMPS (e.g., UPI 2.0 features, AutoPay, mandate, TPAP onboarding etc.)
  • Exposure to agile delivery, working as BA or proxy product owner for payments features.

Technical & Domain Skills
  • Strong understanding of UPI & IMPS transaction flows: payer/payee journeys, PSP/TPAP roles, NPCI switch behaviour, timeouts, declines, and chargebacks.
  • Working knowledge of message formats and APIs:
  • ISO 8583, ISO 20022 concepts, REST/JSON APIs, and NPCI message specifications.
  • Required DB Querying for data analysis, reconciliation checks, and defect triage.
  • Familiarity with reconciliation and settlement for UPI/IMPS, including reports, GL entries, and dispute management.
  • Understanding of security & compliance in payments: SCA/2FA, device binding, PCIDSS basics, and RBI/NPCI guidelines.
Behavioral & Soft Skills

  • Strong analytical and problemsolving skills; ability to decompose complex payment flows into clear requirements and testable rules.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management, comfortable interfacing with business heads, technology teams, and external partners (NPCI, vendors).
  • Ability to work in a highvolume, incidentdriven environment, prioritising changes and production fixes effectively.
  • Ownership mindset with focus on customer experience (success rates, journey friction) and operational efficiency.

NicetoHave

  • Experience with other instant payment schemes (NEFT/RTGS modernization, crossborder, QR/merchant acquiring) or ISO 20022 migration (MTMX).
  • Exposure to CBDC / e pilots, UPIbased crossborder, or paybylink/paytocontact journeys.
  • Prior work in Indian large banks or major payment processors (switch, gateway, or large TPAPs).
