Description

We are seeking an experienced Software Engineer with strong expertise in COBOL (COBOL/400) and IBM AS/400 (iSeries) systems to join our technology team. The ideal candidate will play a key role in maintaining, enhancing, and modernizing legacy applications that support critical business processes. This position requires deep technical knowledge of AS/400 environments, strong analytical skills, and the ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver high-quality software solutions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, test, and implement application enhancements and new features using COBOL/400, RPG, and other iSeries tools.
  • Perform maintenance and support activities on existing AS/400 applications, ensuring optimal performance, scalability, and reliability.
  • Analyze user requirements, translate business needs into technical specifications, and participate in full SDLC activities.
  • Troubleshoot production issues, identify root causes, and implement permanent fixes in a timely manner.
  • Work closely with business analysts, QA teams, and application users to understand requirements, validate outputs, and ensure smooth delivery.
  • Create and maintain technical documentation including design specifications, program logic, process flows, and operational procedures.
  • Support modernization initiatives, including migration to newer platforms, API integrations, and improving system automation.
  • Follow established coding standards, best practices, and change management processes within the AS/400 environment.
  • Monitor system performance, perform data analysis, and recommend optimizations or process improvements.

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • 3- 8 years of hands-on experience with COBOL/400, CL, DB2/400, and AS/400 operations.
  • Strong understanding of batch processing, job scheduling, file management, and system utilities.
  • Experience in debugging, performance tuning, and complex problem resolution.
  • Familiarity with SDLC methodologies, version control, and testing practices.
  • Excellent communication, analytical thinking, and teamwork skills.

Preferred Skills

  • Exposure to modernization tools, API development, or migration from legacy systems.
  • Knowledge of financial, insurance, manufacturing, or retail domain applications.
