Role Summary
We're seeking an Associate Backend Engineer to join our Enterprise Merchandising & Pricing Platforms team. In this role, you will contribute to the development of backend systems that manage item setup, catalog data, pricing calculations, and promotional workflows using Java, Spring Boot, RESTful APIs, and cloud-native architectures.
You'll work closely with senior engineers and cross-functional teams to learn, build, and deliver reliable backend services. This role is ideal for an early-career backend engineer with strong fundamentals in object-oriented programming, curiosity, and a growth mindset who is eager to develop their skills in a fast-paced enterprise environment.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Contribute to the development of backend services and microservices using Java and Spring Boot.
- Collaborate with senior engineers to design, build, and test scalable APIs and backend components.
- Write clean, maintainable, and well-documented backend code following team standards and best practices.
- Assist in building and consuming RESTful APIs for integration with frontend and downstream systems.
- Participate in code reviews, debugging, and testing activities to ensure quality and performance.
- Learn and work with databases (SQL and NoSQL), writing queries and understanding data models.
- Learn and apply modern software development practices, including CI/CD, Git-based workflows, and Agile methodologies.
- Leverage AI-assisted development tools (GitHub Copilot, AI code assistants) as part of daily engineering workflows to accelerate development velocity and code quality.
- Support production systems and assist with troubleshooting under guidance from senior team members.
- Actively learn the merchandising and pricing domain to build context for effective contributions.
Requirements
Years of Experience
0–1 years of backend development experience (internships, projects, or academic coursework acceptable).
Basic Qualifications
- Hands-on exposure to Java, Spring Boot, and object-oriented programming.
- Familiarity with databases (SQL/NoSQL) and RESTful API concepts.
- Strong communication skills and a desire to grow as a backend engineer.
- AI-native mindset — demonstrated willingness to use AI-assisted development tools (GitHub Copilot, AI code assistants) as part of everyday engineering practice.
Preferred Qualifications
- Internship or academic project experience in backend or server-side development.
- Familiarity with React, Angular, or modern frontend frameworks.
- Exposure to cloud platforms (Azure, AWS, or GCP) through coursework or personal projects.
- Familiarity with containerization concepts (Docker) and CI/CD pipelines.
- Interest in retail, eCommerce, or enterprise technology domains.
- Experience using AI tools for code generation, debugging, or learning.
