Key Responsibilities:
Safety Inspections & Audits:
- Assist in conducting regular safety inspections of construction sites to identify potential hazards, unsafe practices, or non-compliance with safety regulations. Report safety deficiencies and collaborate with site supervisors and the safety team to ensure corrective actions are taken promptly.
- Ensure that safety equipment is regularly inspected, maintained, and in good working condition.
Safety Training & Awareness:
- Assist in organizing and conducting safety training sessions for workers, including proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), safe operation of tools, machinery, and site-specific safety protocols.
- Help prepare safety induction materials for new workers and subcontractors.
- Promote safety awareness through daily briefings, toolbox talks, and safety meetings.
Hazard Identification & Risk Assessment:
- Support in performing job hazard analysis (JHA) and risk assessments for various construction tasks and projects.
- Assist in the identification and elimination of potential risks associated with construction activities.
Accident Reporting & Investigation:
- Help investigate workplace accidents, near misses, and unsafe conditions by gathering evidence, conducting interviews, and reporting findings.
- Assist in preparing incident reports and ensuring that corrective measures are implemented to prevent recurrence.
- Safety Documentation & Reporting:
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date safety records, including safety meeting minutes, inspections, incident reports, and training logs.
- Assist the Safety Manager in preparing regular safety performance reports and documentation required for regulatory compliance and auditing.
- Support the preparation and review of safety plans for specific projects, ensuring they meet local regulations and company safety standards.
Compliance & Regulatory Assistance:
- Ensure that safety policies and procedures align with local health and safety regulations (e.g., OSHA, MSHA, or equivalent standards).
- Support the safety team in ensuring compliance with environmental and construction safety regulations during project execution.
- Assist in conducting safety audits to ensure compliance with internal safety programs and external regulatory requirements.
- Emergency Preparedness & Response:
- Assist in the development and implementation of emergency response plans, including evacuation procedures and first aid measures.
- Ensure emergency equipment, such as fire extinguishers, first aid kits, and emergency signage, is available and in good condition.
- Assist in organizing and conducting emergency drills (e.g., fire drills, evacuation drills).
- Promoting Safety Culture:
- Support the safety team in fostering a strong safety culture across all levels of the workforce.
- Encourage workers to report hazards, near misses, and unsafe behavior in a timely manner.
- Help promote a zero-accident mindset and maintain positive working relationships with the site team to ensure safety protocols are followed.
Qualifications:
Education:
- Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or a related field.
- OSHA 30-Hour Construction Safety Certification (or equivalent) is a plus.
- Experience:
- 1-2 years of experience in a construction or safety-related role (internships, co-op, or prior assistant safety experience is a plus).
- Familiarity with construction processes, safety standards, and health and safety regulations.
Skills:
- Basic knowledge of construction safety practices, hazard identification, and risk assessment techniques.
- Familiarity with safety management tools and software (e.g., safety audit tools, incident reporting systems) is an advantage.
- Strong attention to detail, with the ability to identify and address safety hazards effectively.
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) for reporting and documentation.
