Assistant Manager - Logistics & Transportation

This role sits at the intersection of shipping operations, surface transportation, and vendor-managed logistics, delivering end-to-end freight movement, cost control and SLA-driven performance.
About The Opportunity
We are hiring an experienced logistics professional to lead shipping and transportation operations at an on-site location in India. You will drive operational excellence across freight forwarding, carrier management, route optimisation and compliance to improve delivery performance and reduce landed costs.
Role & Responsibilities
- Manage daily shipping and transportation operations plan shipments, allocate carriers, and ensure on-time delivery against SLAs.
- Negotiate freight rates and contracts with carriers and 3PL partners; implement cost-saving initiatives and freight consolidation strategies.
- Oversee documentation and compliance for domestic & international shipments, including customs paperwork, bills of lading and regulatory requirements.
- Monitor KPIs (OTD, freight cost per TEU/MT, detention/demurrage, claims) and deliver continuous improvement plans to meet targets.
- Coordinate cross-functional stakeholders procurement, warehouse, sales to synchronise inventory flow and minimise transit delays.
- Lead vendor performance reviews, corrective action plans and audits to sustain service quality and risk mitigation.
Skills & Qualifications
Must-Have
- Bachelor's degree in Supply Chain, Logistics, Business or related field.
- Proven experience managing shipping, transportation or 3PL operations in India.
- Strong commercial negotiation and carrier management experience.
- Working knowledge of customs clearance and export-import documentation.
- Practical experience with TMS or ERP logistics modules (e.g., SAP MM/SD).
- Advanced Excel skills for freight analysis and reporting.
Preferred
- Experience with freight forwarding and international shipping workflows (air & sea).
- Familiarity with Incoterms 2020 and global trade compliance.
- Professional certification (CILT, CSCP) or experience in 3PL contractual management.
