Job Description

At WisdomWood High (WWH), the Art Educator is a facilitator of expression, thinking, and meaning-making. This role moves beyond product-based art or decorative craft to nurture creative confidence, visual literacy, and reflective thinking in students.

Art at WisdomWood is not an extra, it is a core way of learning, helping students observe deeply, think divergently, express ideas, and connect emotion with intellect.

The Art Educator designs studio-based, inquiry-informed experiences where process matters as much as outcome, and where every child learns to see themselves as a creator.

Key Responsibilities

1. Studio-Based & Process-Oriented Art Learning

  • Design and facilitate developmentally appropriate visual arts experiences across grades.
  • Emphasise process over product, encouraging experimentation, iteration, and reflection.
  • Introduce students to a wide range of materials, techniques, and mediums (drawing, painting, sculpture, mixed media, printmaking, etc.).
  • Encourage risk-taking, originality, and personal voice rather than replication or templates.
  • Build visual thinking and observation skills through intentional art practices.

2. Inquiry, Expression & Interdisciplinary Integration

  • Use art as a medium for inquiry, storytelling, and conceptual exploration.
  • Collaborate with Homeroom Teachers and Learning Facilitators to integrate art into:
  • Inquiry units
  • Project-based learning
  • Cultural and thematic explorations
  • Support students in expressing learning, emotions, and perspectives visually.
  • Encourage connections between art, culture, history, nature, and lived experience.

3. Assessment, Reflection & Documentation

  • Use formative, reflective assessment practices appropriate to creative learning.
  • Guide students in articulating their creative choices, process, and growth.
  • Document learning through portfolios, photographs, reflections, and exhibition-ready narratives.
  • Contribute meaningful inputs to the Holistic Progress Card (HPC) focusing on skills, creativity, and engagement not comparison.

4. Learning Environment & Studio Culture

  • Create and maintain a welcoming, organised, and inspiring art studio.
  • Ensure safe use, care, and management of art materials and tools.
  • Establish routines that promote responsibility, independence, and respect for shared resources.
  • Display student work thoughtfully to honour process, diversity, and voice not just finished pieces.

5. Exhibitions, Events & School Culture

  • Support school-wide exhibitions, showcases, and celebrations of student creativity.
  • Curate student work for displays in ways that tell a learning story, not just decorate walls.
  • Encourage student participation in art-based events, collaborations, and community projects.
  • Contribute to a vibrant, aesthetically rich campus culture.

6. Professional Practice & Collaboration

  • Work collaboratively with other Creative Coaches and academic teams.
  • Participate in planning meetings, reflections, and professional learning sessions.
  • Remain reflective and open to feedback, continuously evolving practice.
  • Align art pedagogy with WisdomWood's progressive learning philosophy.

Required Qualifications & Experience

Essential:

  • Bachelor's degree in Fine Arts, Visual Arts, Design, Art Education, or a related field.

Experience:

  • 35 years of experience teaching art to children in school or studio-based settings.

Preferred Background:

  • Experience in progressive, inquiry-led, IB-aligned, or studio-based learning environments.
  • Familiarity with child-centred and process-based art education approaches.

Expertise Required

  • Strong command of visual art techniques and materials
  • Ability to facilitate creative thinking rather than direct outcomes
  • Understanding of developmental stages in artistic expression
  • Skill in guiding reflection and dialogue around art.

Digital Fluency

  • Comfortable documenting learning using photos, videos, and digital portfolios.
  • Familiarity with basic design or documentation tools is an advantage.
  • Willingness to use Google Workspace for planning and documentation.
