Role Description
We are setting up a high-end Maker Space with advanced digital fabrication tools including CNC machines, laser cutters, and 3D printers. As the Advanced Maker Space Lab Head / Digital Fabrication Lead, you will oversee the planning, development, and operations of the school's Maker Space and digital fabrication programs. You will ensure the lab is a safe, collaborative space while managing equipment, materials, and technological tools. This is a full-time, on-site position based in Coimbatore.
Key Responsibilities
1. Lab Setup & Operations
- Oversee installation, calibration, and operation of CNC machines, laser cutters, and 3D printers
- Establish lab workflows, safety systems, and usage protocols
- Maintain machines and coordinate servicing/repairs
2. Student Training & Program Delivery
- Train students (Grades 6–12) in digital fabrication and prototyping
- Conduct structured sessions on:
- CAD design
- CAM basics
- CNC operations (supervised use)
- Ensure safe, supervised student interaction with machines
3. Technical Instruction
- Teach and support:
- CAD tools (Fusion 360 / SolidWorks)
- CNC toolpaths (basic CAM workflows)
- Laser cutting workflows
- 3D printing (slicing, troubleshooting)
- Introduce electronics + embedded systems (Arduino, sensors) for integrated projects
4. Safety & Compliance
- Define and enforce strict safety SOPs
- Train students and staff on machine safety
- Ensure proper usage of PPE and emergency protocols
5. Project & Innovation Culture
- Mentor student projects (product prototypes, models, engineering builds)
- Support competitions, exhibitions, and innovation challenges
- Build a strong design → build → test culture
Required Skills & Qualifications
- B.E./B.Tech in Mechanical / Mechatronics / Production / Manufacturing / Robotics
- Strong hands-on experience with:
- CNC machines (milling/router preferred)
- Laser cutting systems
- 3D printers
Proficiency in:
- CAD: Fusion 360 / SolidWorks, Basic CAM workflows (toolpath generation), Machine setup and troubleshooting
Additional Technical Skills (Preferred)
- Arduino / embedded systems integration
- Basic electronics and prototyping
- Knowledge of materials (wood, acrylic, metals, plastics)
- Experience with fabrication workflows
Experience
- 2–6 years in fabrication lab / workshop / prototyping environment
- Prior experience in schools, labs (Atal Tinkering Labs or fabrication labs), or innovation centers is a plus
