Role & responsibilities :-
Overall remit involves performing set of tasks and activities aimed at ensuring the optimal performance, security, maximum availability, and reliability of the entire server environment. Key tasks desired are:
Server Provisioning:
- Plan and provision new servers based on business requirements.
- Configure server hardware and install the operating system.
Configuration Management:
- Establish and maintain standardized configurations for servers.
- Implement configuration management tools to manage changes and updates.
Operating System Updates and Patch Management:
- Apply operating system updates and patches to address security vulnerabilities.
- Schedule and perform regular maintenance to keep servers up-to-date.
Performance & Availability Monitoring:
- Use monitoring tools to maintain uptime, and track server performance metrics.
- Analyse performance data to identify bottlenecks and optimize resource usage.
Capacity Planning:
- Forecast future capacity requirements based on current and expected workloads.
- Scale server resources to meet demand and ensure optimal performance.
Backup and Recovery:
- Establish and maintain a robust backup strategy for server data.
- Test backup and recovery procedures regularly to ensure data integrity.
Virtualization Management:
- Manage virtualized server environments using virtualization platforms (e.g., VMware, Hyper-V).
- Optimize virtual machine configurations and resource allocations.
Security Measures:
- Implement security measures to protect servers from unauthorized access and cyber threats.
- Enforce access controls, firewalls, and intrusion detection/prevention systems.
Incident Response and Troubleshooting:
- Respond to server-related incidents promptly.
- Troubleshoot and resolve server issues, minimizing downtime.
Server Hardware Maintenance:
- Perform routine maintenance tasks for server hardware.
- Replace or upgrade hardware components as needed to ensure reliability.
Server Decommissioning:
- Identify and decommission servers that are no longer needed or have reached the end of their lifecycle.
- Ensure secure data disposal and proper documentation.
Server Documentation:
- Maintain comprehensive documentation for each server, including configurations, specifications, and maintenance history.
- Document server roles and dependencies.
Network Connectivity:
- Ensure proper network connectivity for servers.
- Troubleshoot and resolve network-related issues affecting server communication.
User Access Management:
- Manage user access to servers, enforcing least privilege principles.
- Regularly review and update access controls
