Job Description

About the Role

We are looking for an experienced Hypervisor & Windows Engineer to manage, support, and troubleshoot our virtualization and Windows Server infrastructure. The ideal candidate will be responsible for day-to-day operations, incident and problem management, and platform reliability across VMware and Nutanix hypervisor environments and Windows Server production systems, working closely with L1 support and L3/Infrastructure Architects to ensure highly available and secure compute environments.

Key Responsibilities

Hypervisor Operations & Support (VMware & Nutanix)

  • Manage and support virtualization platforms including VMware vSphere/ESXi and Nutanix AHV/Prism, covering day-to-day operations, incident and problem management (L2 escalations from L1), and RCA within defined SLAs.
  • Perform host and cluster-level operations — vMotion/live migration, DRS, HA configuration, resource pools, and cluster capacity monitoring.
  • Manage VMware vCenter and Nutanix Prism Central/Element — health checks, upgrades, patching, and troubleshooting component failures.
  • Perform hypervisor and host upgrades/patching (ESXi builds, Nutanix AOS/AHV) including compatibility checks, rollback strategy, and minimizing downtime.
  • Manage storage integration for hypervisors — datastores, Nutanix storage containers, vSAN, and SAN/NAS-backed storage — including capacity and performance monitoring.
  • Handle VM lifecycle operations — provisioning, cloning, templates, snapshots, backup/restore, and decommissioning.

Windows Server Production Support

  • Provide L2 production support for Windows Server environments (physical and virtualized), including OS installation, patching, performance tuning, and troubleshooting.
  • Manage core Windows services — Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, Group Policy, File & Print services, and IIS.
  • Troubleshoot OS-level issues — boot failures, blue screens, service crashes, driver conflicts, disk/memory pressure, and performance degradation.
  • Perform Windows patch management (WSUS/SCCM) — patch cycle planning, testing, deployment, and compliance reporting.
  • Support Windows clustering and high availability configurations (Failover Clustering, NLB).
  • Manage backup and disaster recovery for Windows workloads, including backup job monitoring, restore validation, and DR drills.

Troubleshooting

  • Diagnose and resolve VM-level issues — boot failures, performance degradation, resource contention (CPU/memory/storage ready time), and VM tools/guest OS issues.
  • Troubleshoot networking issues within virtualized environments — virtual switches/distributed switches, Nutanix virtual networking, VLAN tagging, and connectivity problems between hosts and VMs.
  • Debug storage issues — datastore connectivity, latency, Nutanix storage container faults, and multipathing/HBA-level problems.
  • Investigate host-level issues — hardware alerts, hardware health (iDRAC/iLO), NIC/HBA failures, and hypervisor kernel/log analysis.
  • Troubleshoot Active Directory and authentication issues, replication failures, and Group Policy application errors.
  • Perform root cause analysis for recurring incidents and drive permanent fixes in coordination with L3/Architecture teams.

Security & Access

  • Implement and manage role-based access control (RBAC) within vCenter, Nutanix Prism, and Windows Active Directory for secure, least-privilege access.
  • Support hardening of hypervisor hosts and Windows Servers as per organizational security baselines and CIS benchmarks.
  • Manage certificates, secrets, and credentials used within virtualization and Windows environments, including integration with enterprise credential/secret stores.
  • Ensure compliance with patch SLAs, vulnerability remediation timelines, and audit requirements.

Platform & Automation

  • Contribute to platform design decisions — cluster sizing, capacity planning, resource pool strategy, and standardization of VM/host templates.
  • Automate routine operational tasks using PowerShell, PowerCLI, and Nutanix REST APIs/CLI.
  • Work with monitoring and observability tools (vROps, Nutanix Prism monitoring, SCOM, Grafana) to proactively identify capacity and performance issues.
  • Support Infrastructure as Code practices for provisioning and managing virtual infrastructure where applicable (Terraform, PowerShell DSC).
  • Document runbooks, SOPs, architecture diagrams, and knowledge base articles for recurring issues.
  • Participate in on-call rotation and support during planned maintenance/outages.

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, IT, or related field (or equivalent experience).
  • 6 to 9 years of hands-on experience in hypervisor administration (VMware and/or Nutanix) and Windows Server production support.
  • Strong command over VMware vSphere/ESXi/vCenter and Nutanix AHV/Prism administration.
  • Solid hands-on experience with Windows Server administration (2012/2016/2019/2022), Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, and Group Policy.
  • Deep troubleshooting experience across compute, storage, and networking within virtualized environments.
  • Working knowledge of backup and DR tools/processes for virtualized and Windows workloads.

Preferred / Good to Have

  • VMware Certified Professional (VCP) or Nutanix Certified Professional (NCP).
  • Microsoft Certified: Windows Server Hybrid Administrator or equivalent Windows certification.
  • Experience with PowerShell/PowerCLI scripting for automation of routine tasks.
  • Exposure to hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI) concepts and multi-site/multi-cluster environments.
  • Experience with monitoring/capacity planning tools (vROps, Nutanix Prism, SCOM).
  • Knowledge of cloud/on-prem hybrid environments and migration tools (e.g., VMware HCX, Nutanix Move).

Soft Skills

  • Strong communication skills to collaborate with Infrastructure, Storage, Networking, and Security teams.
  • Ability to work independently under SLA pressure in a 24x7 support environment.
  • Analytical, methodical troubleshooting approach with an ownership mindset.
  • Continuous learning attitude given the evolving virtualization and Windows Server ecosystem.
