Job Description

Description Burns & McDonnell (BMI) is seeking a driven Water Resources / Hydraulics & Hydrologic Engineer to join our Environmental (ENS) Division in support of a wide variety of US-based projects. The ENS team supports engineering design and study efforts that include stormwater management systems, drainage and conveyance infrastructure, flood control evaluations, remediation sites, solid waste and resource recovery facilities, water/wastewater systems, utilities, and other infrastructure projects.

This role will focus on hydrologic and hydraulic analyses, flood studies, stormwater and drainage design, and environmental infrastructure support, with particular emphasis on hydraulic modeling using HEC-RAS, including 2D applications.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and apply hydrologic and hydraulic models for flood studies, stormwater systems, drainage evaluations, and related environmental infrastructure projects.
  • Support water resource planning studies, event-based hydrologic analyses, watershed evaluations, and floodplain assessments.
  • Perform hydraulic analyses using HEC-RAS, including 1D and, where applicable, 2D modeling approaches, to support design studies and project development.
  • Support watershed and runoff evaluations using tools such as HEC-HMS and other hydrologic modeling platforms.
  • Assist with statistical and risk-based hydrologic evaluations using HEC-SSP or similar tools, as applicable.
  • Use HEC-HMS and HEC-RAS to evaluate flood depth, flow routing, channel behavior, and other system responses.
  • Use ESRI ArcGIS to map watershed boundaries, land use/land cover, soil classifications, LiDAR surfaces, hydraulic structures, and other spatial datasets.
  • Incorporate site-specific topography, geotechnical data, survey information, and existing infrastructure into hydrologic and hydraulic models.
  • Support engineering calculations related to pipeline hydraulics, pump system behavior, stormwater conveyance, basin sizing, and grading/drainage analysis.
  • Coordinate modeling results with civil, structural, mechanical, and process engineering teams to support design evaluations and optimize project solutions.
  • Assist in preparing plans, specifications, reports, and technical documentation for stormwater projects.
  • Maintain modeling datasets, follow established workflows, and perform quality checks to ensure accuracy and consistency.
  • Collaborate with US-based project managers and engineers to support project delivery and meet schedule and quality expectations.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Water Resources Engineering, or a related discipline from a recognized institution.
  • Minimum 4 – 8 years of experience in water resources, hydrology/hydraulics, stormwater, drainage, or related civil engineering work.
  • Working knowledge of US codes and standards.
  • Strong experience with hydraulic modeling using HEC-RAS is required, experience with HEC-RAS 2D and HEC-HMS is preferred.
  • Proficient in ESRI ArcGIS and Microsoft Office Tools (Excel, Word, Outlook, Powerpoint, OneNote) is required.
  • Experience with HEC-SSP, AutoCAD Civil 3D, StormCAD and/or CivilStorm is a plus.
  • Strong attention to detail, facilitation, team building, collaboration, organization and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication skills in English (verbal & written).

This job posting will remain open a minimum of 72 hours and on an ongoing basis until filled.
