Role description: This role is with one of our portfolio companies.
We are hiring a Head of Engineering for one of our late-stage portfolio companies. This is the top engineering leadership role within the organization. In this position, you will oversee the entire technical function, establish the engineering culture, and make the hard calls that separate companies that scale from those that stall.
This is not a role for someone who manages from a distance or inherits a clean system. You will walk into technical debt, ambiguity, and high expectations — and be expected to thrive.
Key Responsibilities:
- Engineering Strategy — Define and execute the technical roadmap aligned with business priorities; make deliberate decisions on what to build, what to defer, and what to deprecate
- Technical Debt — Audit the existing architecture, prioritize remediation without halting product velocity, and establish a sustainable path forward
- Culture & Process — Build engineering practices from a low-maturity baseline, including hiring standards, delivery cadences, incident response protocols, and code quality benchmarks.
- Team Leadership — Lead and grow a mid-sized engineering team; building a strong leadership layer beneath you.
- Stakeholder Communication — Be the technical voice to the Founder, business teams, and external stakeholders; translate complexity into clarity
- Hands-on Architecture — Stay close enough to the system to challenge decisions, review critical architecture, and prevent the team from making expensive mistakes
- Familiarity with fast-paced, rapidly iterating, design-forward, and product-focused companies.
- A roll-up-your-sleeves entrepreneurial attitude, along with a team player mentality and a proven record of leading and mentoring employees.
What We're Looking For:
Non-negotiables
- Master's or PhD degree in Engineering or Technology.
- 12+ years of engineering experience with at least 3–4 years in a senior engineering leadership role
- Proven 0-to-scale journey — you've stayed long enough at a high-growth company to see your decisions play out and own the outcomes
- Fintech experience — current or past; lending domain knowledge is a significant advantage
- Demonstrated experience managing technical debt in a live, revenue-generating system
- Strong first-principles thinking — you can tell the difference between tech debt that needs urgent attention and noise
- Exceptional communication — board-ready, team-inspiring, and cross-functional
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic startup environment.
Strong Differentiators
- Hands-on experience with lending infrastructure — LOS, LMS, credit bureau integrations, collections tech
- Experience in a compliance-heavy, regulated environment
- Proven ability to build or significantly upgrade engineering hiring practices and performance culture.
What This Role Is Not
- A title upgrade for someone who wants to manage without getting their hands dirty
- A fit for candidates who have only operated in large, well-resourced engineering orgs
- A greenfield build — you will inherit a system and a team, not start from scratch
Note: We will check the fitment for multiple roles across our portfolios.
