Job Title: Veterinarian Rescue, Recovery & Community Care

Organisation: Paw People Welfare Foundation

Location: Bhopal (Recovery Home + Low-Cost Clinic)

Type: Full-time / Long-term association preferred (Possibility of joining our board at year 2)

About Paw People

Paw People is a hands-on animal welfare organisation working at the intersection of rescue, recovery, rehabilitation, sterilisation, and community coexistence.

We run:

  • A Recovery Home (80+ dogs, expanding)
  • A Low-Cost Veterinary Clinic focused on trauma care, infections, sterilisation, and preventive care

We are a small, committed team. We rely more on communication, judgement, and mutual trust than rigid SOPs. If something needs to be done, we talk, decide, and act.

Role Overview

We are looking for a veterinarian who is clinically sound, emotionally grounded, and communicative.

This role is not for someone who wants a clean OPD-only job.

It is for someone who wants to:

  • Treat animals who cannot speak for themselves
  • Work closely with rescuers, caretakers, and volunteers
  • Make real-time decisions in imperfect conditions
  • Be part of a mission, not just a shift

Key Responsibilities

Medical Care & Clinical Work
  • Diagnose, treat, and monitor in-patient animals at the recovery home
  • Handle OPD cases and visits at the low-cost clinic (minor trauma, infections, vaccinations, deworming)
  • Perform sterilisation surgeries and basic soft-tissue procedures
  • Manage communicable and non-communicable cases with proper isolation judgement
  • Prescribe treatments responsibly, keeping antibiotic stewardship in mind

Rescue & Recovery Support
  • Guide the rescue team during critical cases and emergencies
  • Participate in treatment planning for long-term recovery cases
  • Help decide when an animal is ready for release, adoption, or continued care

Communication & Team Coordination (Very Important)
  • Clearly explain diagnoses, risks, and treatment plans to the team
  • Be open to discussion, second opinions, and collaborative decision-making
  • Communicate limitations honestly we value truth over ego
  • Occasionally help explain medical conditions to donors or supporters (with support from the team)

Ethical & Value Alignment
  • Treat every animal with dignity, patience, and respect
  • Understand the realities of street animals and welfare medicine
  • Be aligned with non-violent, lawful, and compassionate approaches
Who This Role Is For

You will likely thrive here if you:

  • Are comfortable in a small, informal, communication-heavy setup
  • Prefer conversations but don't neglect paperwork
  • Can work without rigid systems but with shared responsibility
  • Are emotionally resilient and don't shut down under pressure
  • Care about doing the right thing, not just the easy thing
This Role Is NOT For You If:
  • You need strict SOPs and hierarchical instructions
  • You avoid rescue cases or emotionally difficult situations
  • You are uncomfortable explaining or discussing your clinical decisions
  • You see animal welfare work as a temporary stop-gap
Qualifications & Experience
  • BVSc / MVSc (India)
  • Registration with State Veterinary Council
  • Experience in:
  • Small animal practice
  • Rescue / shelter medicine / high-volume cases (preferred)
  • Surgical experience in sterilisations is a strong plus

Freshers with strong affinity to animal welfare are welcome

What We Offer
  • Deep involvement in meaningful, life-saving work
  • Autonomy and respect for your medical judgement
  • A team that communicates openly and supports each other
  • Scope to help shape systems as we grow (clinic + recovery home)
  • A workplace where intent and integrity matter more than formality

If you believe veterinary medicine is also about empathy, courage, and communication, you'll feel at home here.
