Job Description
About RightSteps
RightSteps is building a digital learning platform designed to create a more personalised, engaging and connected learning experience for children and the people supporting their development.
We are looking for a Senior UX/UI Designer to join our Product Design team and work closely with the Lead Product Designer, Product and Engineering to shape and deliver these experiences.
The Role
As UX/UI Designer, you will take ownership of complex product design work across the RightSteps platform, translating product requirements and user needs into intuitive journeys, prototypes and production-ready designs.
You will support the Lead Product Designer in maintaining a high standard of UX/UI quality and consistency across the platform, while taking significant ownership of your assigned personas, features and user journeys.
This is a hands-on senior design role. You will be expected to think beyond individual screens and understand the complete experience — considering how users enter a journey, move through it, interact with different features and ultimately achieve their goal.
You will work collaboratively with Product and Engineering from early requirements and discovery through design, handoff, implementation and final UX review.
Key ResponsibilitiesProduct & UX/UI Design
- Translate product requirements, user needs and business objectives into clear user journeys, flows, wireframes, prototypes and high-fidelity designs.
- Own assigned product design initiatives from initial concept through to developer-ready specifications and implementation support.
- Design polished, responsive and accessible experiences in Figma across desktop, tablet and mobile.
- Design experiences appropriate for distinct RightSteps personas, including children across different Key Stages, parents and tutors.
- Consider complete end-to-end journeys rather than designing individual screens or features in isolation.
- Identify usability issues, inconsistencies and opportunities to simplify or improve the user experience.
- Challenge requirements constructively and recommend alternative solutions where they create a stronger user experience.
- Consider interaction states, edge cases, errors, empty states, accessibility and responsive behaviour as part of design delivery.
- Produce clear prototypes and interaction specifications where behaviour cannot be communicated effectively through static designs.
- Ensure designs are sufficiently detailed and documented for Engineering implementation.
Design System & Quality
- Contribute to and maintain the RightSteps Design System, including components, patterns, behaviours and design standards.
- Use existing components and patterns consistently while identifying where new components or patterns are required.
- Support the Lead Product Designer in identifying inconsistencies across the platform and improving overall design cohesion.
- Ensure designs meet agreed UX, UI, accessibility and responsive-design standards.
- Participate actively in design reviews and incorporate feedback from the Lead Product Designer and Product team.
- Provide constructive peer feedback to other designers and contribute to a collaborative design culture.
- Help identify opportunities to improve RightSteps design processes, documentation and ways of working.
Product & Engineering Collaboration
- Work closely with Product to understand requirements, user problems, priorities and acceptance criteria before beginning detailed design.
- Partner with Engineering throughout the design process to understand technical constraints and ensure solutions are feasible.
- Prepare designs for effective developer handoff, including relevant specifications, components, interactions, states and responsive behaviour.
- Respond to implementation questions and provide design clarification during development.
- Review implemented experiences with Engineering to identify visual or UX discrepancies before release.
- Support the Lead Product Designer in maintaining an effective Product → Design → Engineering workflow.
- Escalate significant UX, requirement or implementation concerns to the Lead Product Designer and Product Leadership where appropriate.
Working with the Lead Product Designer
The UX/UI Designer will work closely with and be supported by the Lead Product Designer, who provides overall design direction, standards and quality oversight.
You will be expected to:
- Take ownership of assigned features, personas and journeys while working within the wider RightSteps design direction.
- Bring recommendations and solutions to design reviews rather than relying solely on prescriptive requirements.
- Support the Lead Product Designer in maintaining consistency across designers, personas and product areas.
- Participate in critiques and contribute thoughtful, constructive feedback to other members of the UX/UI team.
- Identify design risks, dependencies and inconsistencies early and raise them with the Lead Product Designer.
- Help evolve the RightSteps Design System and UX/UI standards.
- Incorporate design-review feedback and take ownership of designs through to implementation.
The Lead Product Designer remains the first level of formal UX/UI approval before designs progress to Product Leadership or Engineering handoff where required.
Essential Experience & Skills
- 3+ years of professional UX/UI or Product Design experience.
- Strong portfolio demonstrating work on real digital products, including 1–3 detailed product case studies showing your design process from problem through to solution.
- Advanced working knowledge of Figma, including components, variants, Auto Layout and prototyping.
- Strong UX, UI and interaction-design fundamentals.
- Experience designing complex end-to-end user journeys rather than isolated screens.
- Experience creating user journeys, flows, wireframes, prototypes and responsive high-fidelity designs.
- Strong understanding of responsive design across desktop, tablet and mobile.
- Experience working with design systems and reusable component libraries.
- Experience taking designs from requirements through to developer handoff and implementation.
- Ability to interpret complex requirements and translate them into intuitive experiences.
- Ability to challenge requirements constructively and confidently explain design decisions.
- Strong understanding of accessibility and inclusive-design principles.
- Experience collaborating directly with Product Managers/Product Owners and Engineers.
- Excellent written and spoken English.
- Strong ownership, communication, organisation and attention to detail.
- Comfortable working independently while collaborating within a wider design team.
