We are seeking an Urban / Spatial Planner to join our growing team at WSP, supporting the delivery of creative, sustainable, and people-focused places across the Middle East. You will contribute to major regional, city, and district-scale planning projects, responding to the region's rapid growth, climate challenges, and unique cultural context.
This role offers the opportunity to work on large-scale spatial and strategic planning commissions as part of a multidisciplinary team of planners, urban designers, engineers, and specialists. You will play a key role in the design and delivery of planning projects, managing multiple workstreams concurrently under the guidance of senior and principal planners. The position involves contributing to research, data analysis, and the preparation of high-quality reports and presentations for clients and stakeholders.
Responsibilities
- Support the technical preparation of spatial planning inputs for large-scale and complex strategic spatial plans, strategies, planning policies, frameworks, technical reports, land use analysis, and regulatory submissions, ensuring alignment with client objectives, regulatory frameworks, and international best practices.
- Support spatial planning leads in cross disciplinary coordination to ensure comprehensive and cohesive project outcomes.
- Undertake research, data collection, and spatial analysis using a range of qualitative and quantitative techniques and software, including GIS, to inform baseline assessments, scenario testing, and spatial planning recommendations
- Assist in consultations and workshops with clients, government agencies, and community stakeholders.
- Prepare clear, concise, and visually compelling written and graphic materials for reports, presentations, and briefing documents.
- Be self-responsible for technical excellence and quality deliverables.
- Maintain a proactive and curious approach to emerging trends, tools, and best practices in urban and spatial planning, contributing to internal knowledge-sharing and team development.
Qualifications
- A degree in Urban Planning; a postgraduate certification is advantageous
- Minimum of 5 years of professional experience in urban and spatial planning, ideally within the Middle East or on large-scale planning projects.
- Strong English-language technical writing skills, with experience contributing to formal reports and client-facing documents.
- Proficiency in data analysis, including experience and expertise in data research, the use of GIS, and proficiency in MS Excel. Knowledge and proficiency in Power BI is advantageous.
- Proficiency in report and presentation software, including MS Word, Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop).
- Knowledge of spatial and urban planning principles, approaches and theories
- Knowledge of land use zoning, planning regulations, and development control frameworks.
- Membership of, or eligibility to join, a relevant professional body (such as RTPI, AICP, ISOCARP, or equivalent) is desirable.
