At the City of Leduc, we believe that a safe and well-maintained infrastructure is the backbone of a thriving community. Our Infrastructure Maintenance team is dedicated to ensuring that our transportation networks are reliable, functional, and equipped to meet the needs of a growing city.

We are currently seeking a Traffic Signal Technician to join our Public Services department. This is a brand-new, lead technical role designed for a professional who takes pride in ensuring public safety through the expert maintenance and enhancement of intelligent transportation systems and signal controls.

What is the Opportunity

Reporting to the Manager, Infrastructure Maintenance, the Traffic Signal Technician acts as the lead technical and field representative for all traffic signal control systems. You will be responsible for the entire lifecycle of our signal infrastructurefrom performing critical locates and emergency call-outs to leading planned maintenance and life-cycle replacements.

This role exists to ensure the dependability and functionality of the City's transportation network through an evidence-based approach to asset management. You will project manage the City's maintenance contracts, document field activities, and seek opportunities to apply new technologies that enhance corridor operations. This is a high-visibility role where your technical decisions directly impact the safety and well-being of every resident and commuter in Leduc.

What will you do

Responsibilities

In this lead technical role, you will prioritize field operations and manage the long-term health of our traffic control assets. Key responsibilities include:

  • Diagnose, repair, and maintain traffic signal components and equipment to ensure systems return to safe and expected operation following malfunctions or public reports.
  • Conduct annual spring and fall maintenance programs, including the testing and cleaning of hardware and documenting infrastructure condition assessments.
  • Perform work to set up and troubleshoot vehicle detection zones for data collection and reset applicable zones for optimal traffic flow.
  • Act as the lead field contact for the City's maintenance contractor, overseeing site meetings, inspecting work for deficiencies, and ensuring final acceptance of projects.
  • Managing our inventory of solar-powered traffic devices, including rectangular rapid flashing beacons, school zone flashers, VERMAC digital message boards and speed awareness boards.
  • Utilize CityWorks to maintain an updated infrastructure inventory, tracking all maintenance activity, funding, and time spent on individual assets.
  • Manage the City's Service Agreement with Fortis Alberta for streetlighting, monitoring public requests and coordinating responses to power outages.
  • Provide technical support for capital projects by assisting in design reviews, assisting with cost estimates, and reviewing Traffic Accommodation Plans for temporary closures.
  • Lead and train personnel in safe field practices, enabling Infrastructure Maintenance staff to support field response calls effectively.

Who you are

Required

You are a highly skilled technician with a strong sense of accountability and the independent judgment required to manage complex traffic systems. You bring:

  • A two-year Civil or Electrical Engineering Diploma or a Journeyman Electrician designation (preferred).
  • International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) Traffic Signal Field Technician II Certification.
  • A minimum of five (5) years of progressive experience in a traffic control system maintenance environment.
  • Deep knowledge of MUTCD Manual standards, Work Zone Safety, and Traffic Certification.
  • Strong technical proficiency in utilizing asset management software (such as CityWorks) and managing stock inventories.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to maintain professionalism when dealing with contractors, internal departments, and the public.
  • The physical and mental stamina to work in inclement weather, operate bucket trucks, handle equipment and lift up to 50 lbs.
  • A valid Class 5 driver's license (preferably with a Q endorsement) and the ability to work at heights and within active traffic intersections safely.
