Job Description

Location:Lucknow(DirectorateDharmarthKarya) frequent travel across Uttar Pradesh to survey temples/sites

Role type:Contract / Fixed-term (typical: 1 year, extendable based on project needs)

Reporting to:Team Lead / Director DharmarthKaryaVibhaag

Remuneration:Competitive / consolidated (commensuratewith experience) as per government project norms

Role summary:

We are hiring aTemple Architecture Expert(Heritage / Conservation Architect with specialization in Indian temple architecture) to provide technical leadership and advisory support on conservation, restoration,documentationand design interventions for temples across Uttar Pradesh. The expert willassistthe project team in planning, technical appraisals, stakeholder engagement, preparation of drawings and specifications, supervising restoration works and ensuring interventions respect traditional temple form, ritualuseand statutory guidelines.

Key responsibilities:

  • Act as the technicalTemple Architecture Expertfor the Directorate provide authoritative inputs on design, conservationmethodologyand approvals.
  • Conductsite surveys, condition assessments,photographicdocumentation and prepare measured drawings / elevations / sections for temple structures.
  • Develop conservation and restoration proposals: conservation strategy,methodology, materials specifications, contractor scope, and Bill of Quantities.
  • Prepare and review architectural drawings (schematics, working drawings) and technical specifications using AutoCAD / Revit / appropriate CAD tools.
  • Provide inputs for tender documents, technical evaluations, contractorselectionand supervise implementation for technical compliance.
  • Ensure all interventionscomply withrelevant conservation / heritage statutes, applicable Government Orders (GOs)and guidelines (state & national heritage / ASI norms).
  • Represent the Directorate in inter-departmental and stakeholder meetings, including district authorities, priests/temple committees, localcommunitiesand contractors.
  • Lead/participatein technical presentations, publicconsultationsand capacity-building workshops for masons/contractors/officials.
  • Liaise with Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), State Archaeology / Heritage departments and other heritage agencies asrequired.
  • Maintain project documentation, MIS, progress reports and providetimelyupdates to senior management.
  • Identifyrisks to structure/heritage value and propose mitigation measures (structural interventions, drainage, ventilation, access,ritualuse compatibility).
  • Mentor junior architects/engineers on heritage practice and quality control during execution.

Essential qualifications & experience:

  • Master's Degree in Architecture(M.Arch) or equivalent.
  • Specialization or demonstrableexpertiseinTemple / Medieval Indian Architecture, Conservation, Architectural History or Heritage Conservation.
  • Minimum 5 years post-qualification experiencein government advisory, heritage conservation projects, temple restoration, architectural consultancy or similar (preferably with public-sector/PSU/Government projects).
  • Proventrack recordof at leastone completed heritage/temple conservation project(design + supervision) or 2+ significant assignments involving documentation/conservation.
  • Strong knowledge of historic building materials and traditional temple construction techniques (stone carving, lime mortar, timber, joinery, masonry detailing).
  • Experience preparing technical specifications, cost estimates, tenderdocumentsand supervising field works.
  • Proficiencyin architectural documentation tools:AutoCAD(required);Revit,SketchUp,3D photogrammetry / laser scanningknowledge is desirable.
  • Excellent stakeholder management skills experience interacting with government departments, religious trusts/committeesand local communities.
  • Ability to travelfrequentlyand perform fieldwork in rural and semi-urban locations.

Desirable / Preferred:

  • Degree / certification inConservation(e.g.,Post-graddiploma in conservation, ICCROM-related training) or PhD in Architectural History / Conservation.
  • Prior work withASI, State Archaeology Departments, UNESCO projects, or reputed heritage consultancies.
  • Experience instructural assessmentof heritage masonry and familiarity with retrofitting techniques respectful of heritage values.
  • Experience in training masons and traditionalcraftsmen, andpreparing capacity-building modules.
  • Familiarity with statutory processes, permissions, and Government Orders (GOs) related to religious structures and public works.
  • Good report-writing skills and ability to present technical findings in both Hindi and English.

Deliverables / KPIs:

  • Timely site-condition reports + measured drawings for assigned temples.
  • Conservation strategy & detailed working drawings for selected temples.
  • Tender-ready technical specifications and BOQ for restoration works.
  • Supervision reports and quality compliance during execution.
  • Number of stakeholder consultations/workshops conducted & training sessions delivered.
  • Acceptance of technical submissions by the Directorate / statutory authorities.
