Position: Technical Superintendent – Externally managed Fleet
Contract type: Permanent / Full Time
Reporting to: Head of Fleet Performance (London)
Location: Mumbai, India
Overview of role
This role is responsible for providing dedicated technical oversight of externally managed vessels, ensuring strong control over cost, asset condition, operational performance and regulatory compliance.
The Technical Superintendent will act as a single accountable point for technical performance, improving visibility, strengthening governance of third-party managers and supporting proactive decision-making across the fleet.
Key responsibilities and primary deliverables
Cost Control & Commercial Oversight
- Review and validate DRC postings to identify inflated, incorrect, or delayed entries.
- Strong compliance on non-budgeted costs and owner's approval.
- Prevent recurring overspend through early intervention.
- Benchmark ship manager technical and financial performance across vessels.
Primary Deliverable: Consistent reduction in cost leakage and improved budget adherence.
Asset Protection & Condition Monitoring
- Conduct periodic vessel inspections (target: 6–8 inspections per year).
- Ensure vessels maintain required technical condition despite third-party management.
- Oversee dry-docking preparation, execution and timely delivery of vessel.
Primary Deliverable: Maintained or improved vessel condition and readiness for operations and inspections while adhering to docking budgets.
Operational Efficiency & Incident Support
- Act as the dedicated technical point of contact for assigned vessels and work closely with Operations team.
- Support timely and effective decision-making during technical downtime.
- Improve coordination between ship managers, vessels, and internal teams.
Primary Deliverable: Faster response times and reduced operational disruption.
Technical Performance Monitoring & Visibility
- Monitor and analyse vessel performance indicators, including:
- Main Engine / Auxiliary Engine performance
- Lubricating oil consumption and trends
- PMS compliance and overdue maintenance
- Critical spare parts inventory
- Ensure routine follow-up with ship managers on deviations and recurring issues.
Primary Deliverable: Improved technical performance trends and reduced equipment-related risks.
Crew Engagement & Technical Alignment
- Conduct regular technical briefings with Chief Engineers and 2nd Engineers.
- Align onboard teams with company expectations on performance and maintenance.
Primary Deliverable: Better onboard awareness, accountability, and execution of technical standards.
Skills profile
- Strong analytical and problem-solving capability together with the ability to support decisions with sound reasoning and judgement.
- Clear, precise, and confident verbal and written communication, combined with strong interpersonal skills, to build and sustain effective relationships with key stakeholders ship managers and onboard teams.
- Ability to drive accountability across third-party stakeholders.
- Proactive, structured, and performance-driven approach.
- Commercial awareness and ability to apply sound commercial judgement.
- You have a strong focus on delivering quality and meeting deadlines. A successful track record in dealing with a broad set of activities within a fast-paced environment, whilst managing ambiguity and pressure well is a requirement for this role.
Relevant experience & education
- Minimum 2 years experience as Technical Superintendent within a Ship Management Company.
- Experience with externally managed vessels is advantageous.
- Ex sea-going senior engineer officer (experienced 1st Engineer / Chief Engineer) on Tankers and/or Bulk Carriers is preferred.
