What are the roles and responsibilities of a teacher

Responsibilities

A teacher has a broad range of roles and is entrusted with a number of responsibilities. Some of them are described briefly below:

  • Prepares educational content including teaching material, notes, worksheets, assignments, tests etc.
  • Keep students disciplined and maintain order in the classroom and school premises
  • Plan events for the term in the form of extra curricular activities, sports etc.
  • Plan and schedule parent-teacher meetings
  • Work closely with administration to ensure timely available of resources
  • Keep tab of progress of all children and pay special need/attention in case some students are unable to keep pace
  • Ensure a safe working environment for all students
  • Allocate home assignments, projects, tests etc. and grade the students accordingly

How to become a teacher

There are few things to keep in mind before deciding to become a teacher.

First, determine which level of school you would like to teach. You can choose from Kindergarten stage (Lower KG and Upper KG), Primary Level (grade 1 through grade 8), Secondary (grade 9 & 10), and Senior Secondary (grade 11 &12).

Secondly, ensure you choose the age group that you are most comfortable with. Also keep in mind, the higher the classes that you will opt to teach, more are the qualifications that will be required.

Third, choose which subject you would like to teach / specialise in. Primary teachers do not need to specialise. They need to have basic knowledge of arithmetic, reading, writing, english, social science, and science. Secondary school teachers have the choice of subjects such as Hindi/Sanskrit, History, Geography, Civics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Art, Dance, Music, Physical Education etc.

What is the basic degree required to become a teacher

There are primarily three levels of acquiring a teacher's degree; Diploma, Bachelor's and Master's. Primary schools accept a diploma degree (D.Ted.). In order to teach higher secondary students you require a bachelor's degree (B.Ed.) and a Master's (M.Ed.) if you want to specialise.

This along with a bachelor's degree in the relevant subject and a minimum of 2 years teaching experience.

What are the various teacher training courses available in India

A number of options for teaching courses are available. They are as follows:Certificate courses

BA B.Ed. or B.Sc. B.Ed. -

These integrated courses are usually 4 year courses and in order to be eligible for these courses, you must have passed the 12th board with at least 50% aggregate and have English as one of your core subjects.

D.El.Ed - This is useful when you want to become a primary/elementary school teacher. It is a 2 year course for which you must have cleared the12th boards with 50% aggregate. This could vary across institutions.

B.P.Ed. - Commonly known as BPE course, it is an undergraduate degree in physical education. The duration is 3 years and requires you to be 12th pass with 50% aggregate in any discipline.

B.Ed. - A Bachelor of Education is a very popular degree. It is a two year postgraduate degree which you can pursue after a Bachelor's or a Master's degree. This is required in order to join as a secondary or higher secondary school teacher. You must have cleared your bachelor's/master's degree with 50% aggregate marks. Also you will be required to clear the B.Ed. entrance exam for admission to this course.
