Title: IBMi System Administrator
Overview
- The IBMi System Administrator is responsible for the reliable operation, performance, and security of IBM i (AS/400) systems. This role ensures business continuity through proactive system monitoring, efficient job scheduling, and robust backup and recovery strategies.
Key Responsibilities:
System Monitoring & Maintenance
- Monitor system performance, resource utilization (CPU, memory, disk), and job queues.
- Identify and resolve system bottlenecks and errors.
- Maintain system health through regular diagnostics and performance tuning.
Job Scheduling & Automation
- Use IBM i Job Scheduler (WRKJOBSCDE) to automate batch jobs and system tasks.
- Ensure timely execution of critical business processes.
- Coordinate with application teams to optimize job dependencies and scheduling windows.
Backup & Recovery
- Develop and maintain backup strategies using SAVSYS, SAVLIB, SAVOBJ, and IFS backups.
- Implement multi-tier backup plans: daily incremental, weekly full library, and monthly full system backups.
- Use BRMS (Backup, Recovery & Media Services) for automated media tracking and recovery operations.
- Perform regular restoration tests to validate backup integrity.
- Execute recovery procedures including RSTLIB, RSTOBJ, RSTUSRPRF, and RSTCFG during disaster recovery scenarios.
Security & User Management
- Administer user profiles, access permissions, and security policies.
- Conduct regular audits to ensure compliance with internal and external standards.
Software & System Updates
- Install and patch IBM i operating system and related software.
- Coordinate with vendors for software upgrades and issue resolution.
Capacity Planning & Documentation
- Forecast system growth and recommend hardware/software upgrades.
- Maintain detailed documentation of system configurations, procedures, and troubleshooting steps.
