What You Need To Know About This Career Option
What qualification required to become a professional Swimmer
It is obvious you don't need a graduate degree or any professional qualification to learn swimming or to become a competitive swimmer. At the same time, please remember that in order to pursue a career as a coach or a lifeguard or for other job opportunities as a swimmer; you will need graduate degrees in physical education and other certifications.
In order to become a competitive swimmer, you must join an academy that teaches all the finer aspects of swimming. Right from the basics of staying afloat in water to the various complex swimming strokes such as butterfly stroke, breaststroke, backstroke etc.
The Swimming Federation of India promotes aquatic sport in order to win accolades at the Olympics and other World Championships. It also works proactively towards promoting the Khelo India initiative that aims to kindle the interest in sports and thereby increase participation.

Different types of swimming events require different types of training. The following is a list of different swimmers and their training practices.

- Mid-Distance - They compete in 200m and/or 500m freestyle. Aerobic training is part of their training for mid-size events.
- Distance - It involves 500m+ freestyle and also focuses more on aerobic training. Considering the distance, it requires more stamina and power. Training in developing good lung power is also required for this type of event.
- Strokers - They can be both mid-distance as well as sprinters are trained in all styles of swimming freestyle, breaststroke, butterfly stroke and backwards stroke.

What basic skills required to be a Swimmer
Swimming is all about synchronising your breath and your stroke. Endurance training is an integral part of this sport, as it requires you to be in water at all times. Basic skills combined with stroke skills gives you a complete set to master the sport of swimming.
Basic Skills
- Obviously physical stamina tops the list, followed by good lung capacity. Both these can be developed with intense training sessions that need to be strictly adhered to with dedication and hard work.
- The right breathing technique makes the swimmer at ease with the water and swim effortlessly. Timing your breaths is an important technique that must be mastered.
- Diving into a pool can be the deciding factor while competing in a race. A good dive can actually help you cover a large part of the distance in the pool giving an edge over the others. You must learn to dive both forwards and backwards.
- As is often found in swimming competitions, you will be required to execute a flip-turn as you touch one end of the pool and return to complete the race. Now this flip-turn should be completed with both speed and power to enable you to get sufficient boost and gain an edge over the others.
- Powerful kicking techniques using the legs and synchronising it with the arm thrusts helps you propel with ease through the water.
How many types of stroke skills are there
Four types of stroke skills are backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly and freestyle.
- Backstroke - One of the easier strokes, it helps you to learn balance as a swimmer. Moving arms in large circular motions while lying on your back and kicking simultaneously propels you through the water.
- Breaststroke - This involves perfect synchronisation of breath and stroke. This skill required tremendous physical strength especially in the arms as you need to push the water in order to move forward.
- Butterfly stroke - One of the most difficult strokes to learn, it consumes a lot of energy but can help with speed if the swimmer has mastered the technique well.
- Freestyle - It is one of the most basic and easy skills to learn. Consistent movements, right breathing and quick motions are key to acing this stroke.
