Job Purpose

1) Job Purpose

The primary role of the Shift Supervisor (Electrical) is to manage and execute all electrical maintenance

activities during the shift to ensure safe, reliable, and continuous plant operations. The position is

responsible for effective breakdown handling, adherence to safety systems, basic analysis of failures,

and coordination with the maintenance team to minimize downtime.

The Shift Supervisor is expected to demonstrate strong technical hands-on capability, discipline in

safety practices, and compliance with quality and statutory requirements while supporting smooth mill

and auxiliary equipment operations.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Attend and rectify electrical breakdowns across mills and all supporting equipment, working as

part of a team to restore operations in the shortest possible time.

2. Ensure strict compliance with PTW, LOTO/LOTOTO, JSA, and Toolbox Talks, maintaining a high

standard of safety during all activities.

3. Carry out basic problem analysis using QC tools and Why-Why methodology maintain detailed

breakdown data and share findings with the Section In-Charge for corrective actions.

4. Perform troubleshooting of rolling mill control systems, including PLCs, digital DC/AC drives, and

auxiliary systems.

5. Execute maintenance and troubleshooting of AC/DC motors, transformers, and power

distribution systems up to 11kV and above.

6. Comply with ISO 9001, ISO 14001, TS, and OHSAS requirements relevant to departmental

activities.

7. Implement 5S and BCE practices to maintain high standards of electrical installations and

equipment housekeeping.

8. Identify abnormalities proactively and take corrective actions to improve safety, reliability, and

equipment life.

9. Monitor daily plant energy consumption, complete checklists, and initiate corrective actions

where deviations are observed.

10. Control the usage of spares, ensure proper handling and condition, maintain optimum inventory

levels, and return unused spares to the store.

11. Monitor critical mill parameters during the shift as guided by the Area Head (AH) and report

deviations promptly.

With Hindalco's downstream operations expanding rapidly, the organization is focused on enhancing

product quality, improving equipment reliability, and optimizing overall plant performance. Electrical

systems, controls, and automation are critical to sustaining uninterrupted rolling mill operations, where

timely breakdown restoration and safe execution are key to minimizing downtime and production

losses.

The Shift Supervisor (Electrical) plays a pivotal role in this environment by leading all electrical

maintenance and breakdown activities during the shift. The role demands quick decisionmaking,

effective troubleshooting, and close coordination with shift and nonshift teams to ensure operational

continuity. In addition to technical supervision, the Shift Supervisor is responsible for enforcing safety

and statutory compliance, maintaining required documentation, supporting basic ERP processes,

managing spares in coordination with stores, and monitoring energy consumption.

By acting as the first line of leadership on the shop floor, the Shift Supervisor ensures equipment

availability, safe working practices, disciplined execution, and continuous improvement in electrical

system reliability.

Major Challenges of the Role

Developing and applying a strong understanding of complex rolling mill electrical and automation

systems, including PLCs, AC/DC drives, instrumentation, and protection systems, to restore operations

quickly and safely under pressure.

Ensuring 100% compliance with safety and statutory requirements, including PTW, LOTOTO, JSA, toolbox talks, and associated documentation, even during emergency breakdown situations. Leading and guiding shift personnel during breakdowns and maintenance activities, ensuring correct troubleshooting approach, work quality, and safe execution. Coordinating effectively with production, mechanical, utilities, and other supporting departments to enable smooth workflow, clear communication, and faster problem resolution. Managing critical spares and shiftlevel inventory, ensuring availability of essential items, correct usage, proper records, and timely return of unused material to stores. Maintaining accurate technical documentation and supporting ERP entries, including breakdown logs, equipment status updates, checklists, and maintenance observations. Monitoring shiftwise energy consumption, identifying abnormalities, and supporting initiatives to reduce losses and meet energy targets. Driving and supporting continuous improvement activities, including Kaizens and corrective actions aimed at improving safety, reliability, and productivity. Sustaining high standards of housekeeping, discipline, and 5S implementation across all electrical installations and work areas.
