Job Description
The Shaft Furnace Operator is responsible for the safe, efficient, and continuous operation of the shaft furnace to ensure optimal production output, consistent product quality, and equipment reliability. The operator continuously monitors critical process parameters, controls furnace operating conditions, coordinates with CCR and field personnel, and ensures strict compliance with safety and operational standards.
Key Responsibilities
1 Furnace Operation & Monitoring
- Operate and control the shaft furnace from CCR or field control panel.
- Monitor temperature profile, pressure, gas flow, burden level, and reduction parameters.
- Maintain stable furnace conditions to achieve target metallization and production rate.
- Adjust fuel, air, and feed rates as per process requirement.
2 Process Control
- Ensure proper burden charging and uniform distribution.
- Control reduction gas composition, pressure, and flow.
- Monitor top gas temperature and pressure trends.
- Ensure proper cooling and discharge of finished product (e.g., DRI/Sponge Iron).
3 Safety & Compliance
- Execute safe startup and shutdown procedures as per SOP.
- Identify and respond to abnormal conditions such as overheating, gas leakage, and pressure fluctuations.
- Follow plant safety standards and permit-to-work systems.
- Participate in emergency handling and trip management.
4 Coordination & Communication
- Coordinate with CCR operators, maintenance teams, and shift supervisors.
- Report process deviations, alarms, and equipment abnormalities.
- Maintain shift logs, operational records, and production data.
5 Maintenance Support
- Assist in routine furnace inspections and condition monitoring.
- Support preventive and breakdown maintenance activities.
- Identify early signs of refractory wear, mechanical issues, or instrumentation faults.
Required Qualifications
- Diploma in Mechanical, Metallurgical, or Chemical Engineering.
- 2-5 years of experience in Shaft Furnace or manufacturing setup.
- Basic knowledge of DCS .
- Strong understanding of safety practices in high-temperature industrial operations.
