Role Summary
The Testing SME (Subject Matter Expert) is responsible for providing deep domain expertise in software testing processes, tools, and best practices. This role ensures the quality and reliability of applications by guiding teams on test strategy, test design, automation frameworks, defect prevention, and continuous quality improvement. The SME acts as a trusted advisor to development, product, and QA teams.
Key Responsibilities
1. Test Strategy & Planning
Define and review test strategies, test plans, and test coverage approaches.
Identify testing scope, prioritize test activities, and assess risks.
Establish best practices for functional, non-functional, regression, system, and integration testing.
2. Technical Expertise
Provide hands-on expertise in test design techniques, automation frameworks, and testing tools.
Guide teams in selecting appropriate testing methodologies (Agile, DevOps, CI/CD-based testing).
Evaluate and implement tools for automation, performance, and security testing.
3. Quality Governance
Establish quality standards, KPIs, and metrics to measure QA maturity and effectiveness.
Conduct periodic quality audits, gap assessments, and continuous improvement initiatives.
Define and maintain test documentation standards and processes.
4. Collaboration & Leadership
Serve as the go-to expert for testing-related queries across teams.
Mentor and upskill QA engineers and automation testers.
Work closely with developers, product owners, and business teams to ensure defect prevention and early issue detection.
5. Test Execution & Oversight
Review critical test cases, automation scripts, and performance test results.
Ensure defect triaging and root cause analysis (RCA) are performed effectively.
Oversee execution of complex test cycles (UAT, SIT, performance, migration, etc.)
6. Innovation & Continuous Improvement
Stay updated with the latest trends in QA, automation tools, AI-driven testing, and DevOps.
Propose improvements in testing processes to enhance speed, accuracy, and efficiency.
Drive adoption of modern testing approaches such as shift-left, shift-right, and test orchestration.
Required Skills & Experience
Technical Skills
Strong knowledge of testing methodologies, SDLC/STLC, and QA processes.
Expertise in automation tools like Selenium, Playwright, Cypress, Appium, etc.
Familiarity with API testing tools (Postman, RestAssured), Performance tools (JMeter, LoadRunner).
Understanding of CI/CD pipelines (Jenkins, Azure DevOps, GitHub Actions).
Knowledge of SQL, basic scripting (Python, JavaScript, Java), and cloud-based testing.
Domain Expertise
(Choose as applicable: BFSI, Retail, Healthcare, Telecom, eCommerce, BPO, etc.)
Soft Skills
Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities.
Strong communication skills to influence stakeholders.
Ability to mentor and guide QA teams.
Detail-oriented with a quality-first
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in computer science, IT, Engineering, or related field.
Certification such as ISTQB, Certified Test Manager, Agile Tester, etc.
612+ years of total experience in QA with at least 23 years as SME/Lead.
