About The Team

The Service Enablement Platform (SEP) team is responsible for multiple critical platforms that enable the servicing across all channels at American Express. This includes Case Platforms that are used for Global Disputes Management, Fraud Servicing, Credit, Collections and Back-Office Case processing besides Global Card Issuance and Automation.

From creating next-generation applications and microservices to leveraging AI, you could be doing transformational work that brings our iconic, global brand into the future. Card Issuance and Payment Devices platforms supports issuance of American Express cards and manage payment device activities which directly powers our growth, customer relationship and brand promise.

Responsibilities

The Service Enablement Platform (SEP) team is seeking a Staff Engineer for driving transformation across its multiple platforms. As a Staff Engineer, you will be a hands-on engineer building highly available, scalable and secure distributed system on the cloud that supports the company's long-term strategy and vision. Your primary responsibility is design and drive next generation modernization of platforms supporting Amex card issuance & payment services, Dispute & Fraud Servicing, Automation and Credit & Collection Platforms. Staff Engineers in American Express is an individual contributor role and is at the same level as a Director of Engineering.

  • You will be responsible to architect and own coordination across multiple platforms across the portfolio, ensuring scalability, resiliency, and compliance with global standards.
  • Build high level design as well as detailed design of complex subsystems with emphasis in high availability and low latency.
  • Working with developers in day to day activities and helping in review of design, coding and the SDLC tasks.
  • Build POCs to experiment new technologies, databases and other application infrastructure.
  • You will constantly pursue and learn industry leading/innovative technologies and solutions. Be acutely aware of enabling technologies and open-source products to build low latency distributed systems.
  • Drive a culture of innovation and experimentation, in new form factors (wearables, embedded devices) and secure payment technologies.
  • Provide technical consulting support to Global Product teams and regional stakeholders for secure product rollouts
  • Partner with risk, compliance, and cybersecurity teams to ensure solutions meet evolving regulatory and security requirements.
  • Work with peers, Principal Engineers and Principal Architects to assimilate new technology and delivery methods into scalable software solutions, using and contributing to engineering best practices across the company.

Qualifications

  • You have Computer Science / Information Systems degree, or equivalent with at-least 10+ years of work experience.
  • Strong implementation experience using languages like GoLang or Java. Keen understanding of how to build highly performance systems with such languages. Experience building intelligent solutions leveraging GenAI and other modern tech stacks.
  • Strong knowledge of cryptography algorithms (DES, AES, ECC, RSA).
  • Hands-on experience with Hardware Security Modules (HSMs) and Key Management Systems (KMS) is desirable.
  • Familiarity with EMVCo and Global Platform specifications is a plus.
  • Understanding of ISO 7816 and ISO 14443 standards.
  • Knowledge of PCI technology and transaction processing
  • Experience with mobile wallet integration (Apple Pay, Google Pay, Samsung Pay) and Wearable/IoT payment devices will be a plus
  • Have built and delivered large scale enterprise systems/products. Implemented critical aspects of such systems and have supported such applications in production as SAS service.
  • Keen awareness of concerns in massively distributed systems and effective solutions.
  • Experience working in DevOps teams and Scrums.
  • Ability to learn and deep dive into new technology and business domains, question status quo and think outside of the box.
  • Have excellent written and verbal communications skills. Create and deliver effective presentations to Senior Leadership.
  • Ability to partner and influence effectively across multiple business and functional lines, up to and including technology leadership team and business leadership team
  • Exceptional leadership skills to inspire and support a diverse and inclusive team of industry-leading internal and external talent.
