Role Summary

The NICU Nurse is responsible for providing specialized nursing care to premature and critically ill newborn infants in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. The role involves continuous monitoring, administering medications, assisting neonatologists during procedures, and ensuring the safety and comfort of neonates while supporting families during treatment.

Key Responsibilities

Patient Care

  • Provide comprehensive nursing care to premature and critically ill newborns.
  • Monitor vital signs such as heart rate, respiration, oxygen saturation, and temperature.
  • Assist in stabilization and resuscitation of newborns when required.
  • Administer medications, IV fluids, and nutritional support as prescribed.
  • Maintain strict infection control practices within the NICU.

Clinical Procedures

  • Assist neonatologists during medical procedures such as intubation, ventilation, and line insertions.
  • Manage neonatal equipment such as ventilators, incubators, phototherapy units, and infusion pumps.
  • Maintain accurate patient records and nursing documentation.
  • Monitor feeding patterns and support breastfeeding guidance for mothers.

Coordination & Communication

  • Coordinate with neonatologists, pediatricians, and other healthcare professionals for patient care.
  • Educate and support parents regarding neonatal care and treatment plans.
  • Report any changes in the infant's condition to the medical team immediately.

Compliance & Safety

  • Follow hospital protocols, NICU guidelines, and patient safety standards.
  • Ensure proper hygiene and infection prevention practices.
  • Maintain confidentiality of patient information.

Qualifications

  • B.Sc Nursing / GNM from a recognized institution.
  • Valid Nursing Registration (KNC / State Nursing Council).

Experience

  • 13 years of experience in NICU / Pediatric ICU preferred.
  • Freshers with NICU training may also be considered.

Skills Required

  • Knowledge of neonatal care and critical care practices.
  • Ability to handle neonatal emergency situations.
  • Good communication and teamwork skills.
  • Attention to detail and strong clinical observation skills.
