Role Overview
We are seeking a Staff Engineer with 6 to 9 years of hands-on experience in Java and Spring Boot to provide technical leadership across one or more products within the ETPL AI portfolio. This role sits within ETPL's engineering capability and carries responsibility for backend architecture, system design, engineering quality, and the technical development of delivery teams.
The Staff Engineer will be the senior technical authority within their product engineering context - owning architectural decisions, driving best practices, and ensuring that the systems they are responsible for are scalable, maintainable, and built to support enterprise-grade deployments. The role combines deep hands-on engineering with the influence and communication skills to lead other engineers and engage meaningfully with product and business stakeholders.
This is a role for an engineer who has moved beyond individual contribution and is ready to shape how systems are designed, how teams deliver, and how technical quality is defined and maintained across a product.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide technical leadership in the design, development, and evolution of backend systems and services built on Java and Spring Boot across assigned ETPL AI products
- Own system architecture decisions for assigned product areas - ensuring scalability, modularity, security, and performance across multi-tenant enterprise deployments
- Lead and mentor a team of engineers, conducting code reviews, architectural walkthroughs, and technical discussions that raise the capability and quality of the broader team
- Translate product requirements and business logic into well-structured, maintainable technical designs - collaborating closely with product managers and senior stakeholders to ensure alignment between technical decisions and product outcomes
- Define and enforce coding standards, design patterns, and engineering governance frameworks across the product codebase
- Conduct architectural reviews and deep code audits to identify technical debt, performance bottlenecks, and structural risks - and lead the resolution of findings in a structured manner
- Design and optimize data models, database schemas, and query performance across relational databases, particularly MySQL and PostgreSQL, to support high-volume, data-intensive operations
- Drive the adoption of RESTful API design standards, microservices principles, and service integration patterns appropriate to ETPL's platform architecture
- Own the technical quality of the software delivery lifecycle within the product team - including requirements validation, design reviews, testing governance, deployment oversight, and post-release monitoring
- Identify, evaluate, and integrate appropriate libraries, frameworks, and tools to improve engineering efficiency, system reliability, and long-term maintainability
- Act as the escalation point for critical technical issues and production incidents within the product, leading structured root cause analysis and resolution
- Champion a culture of engineering excellence, documentation discipline, and continuous improvement within the product engineering team
Experience And Profile
- 6 to 9 years of hands-on software engineering experience, with strong and sustained depth in Java and Spring Boot
- Demonstrated experience designing and delivering scalable, high-performance backend systems for enterprise or SaaS products
- Experience leading or mentoring other engineers within a structured delivery team
- Proven ability to make and communicate sound architectural decisions across backend systems, APIs, and data layers
- Experience with microservices architecture, RESTful API design, and distributed systems is expected
- Prior exposure to multi-tenant platform design or enterprise product engineering is an advantage
Skills And Attributes
- Deep mastery of Java and Spring Boot, with strong expertise in building modular, production-grade enterprise backend systems
- Solid understanding of Spring ecosystem components - Spring MVC, Spring Security, Spring Data, Spring Cloud - and their appropriate application in enterprise contexts
- Strong database engineering skills across relational databases (MySQL, PostgreSQL) including schema design, query optimization, indexing strategies, and performance tuning at scale
- Proficiency in RESTful API design and development, with a clear understanding of API contracts, versioning, and integration standards
- Experience with microservices architecture, service decomposition, and inter-service communication patterns including REST and message queuing (Kafka, RabbitMQ, or equivalent)
- Familiarity with containerization and orchestration using Docker and Kubernetes, and with CI/CD pipeline tooling for structured, automated delivery
- Proficiency with Git and structured branching strategies for collaborative development within multi-team engineering environments
- Working knowledge of cloud platforms - AWS / Azure - and the deployment and infrastructure considerations relevant to enterprise SaaS products
- Experience with unit testing, integration testing, and test-driven development practices, with a commitment to maintaining high automated test coverage
- Strong analytical and problem-solving capability with structured root cause analysis — particularly under production pressure
- Clear and effective communication skills, with the ability to articulate technical decisions and trade-offs to both engineering teams and non-technical stakeholders
- A collaborative and mentoring disposition - genuinely invested in the growth of the engineers around them, not just personal technical output
