Staff Data Scientist

Job Summary: As a Staff Data Scientist, you will lead the development of data science and AI solutions that power commerce experiences within JioHotstar. You will work on problems spanning intent understanding, offer and product discovery, ranking, conversion prediction, and commerce journey optimization.

The role will involve leveraging large-scale content, behavioural, contextual, and transactional signals to understand user intent and connect users with relevant commerce experiences at the right moment. You will also drive applications of Generative AI and large language models (LLMs) to build conversational and agentic commerce experiences that enable users to discover, evaluate, and transact seamlessly.

As a senior individual contributor, you will help define the data science strategy for Commerce, take ambiguous problems from concept to production, and build intelligent systems that improve discovery, engagement, conversion, and overall commerce outcomes.

About the Team: JioHotstar is building commerce experiences that bring content, discovery, and transactions together within the consumer journey.

The team sits at the intersection of content, commerce, AI, and consumer technology. Our goal is to make commerce a natural extension of the JioHotstar experience by helping users discover relevant products and services based on their interests, context, and intent.

Key Responsibilities:

• Analyze large-scale content, behavioural, contextual, and transactional datasets to understand user intent, preferences, discovery patterns, and commerce behaviour.
• Design, develop, and productionize machine learning and statistical models for recommendations, ranking, intent prediction, conversion propensity, offer relevance, personalisation, and commerce discovery.
• Build intelligent systems that determine what commerce experience to surface, to which user, and in what context, balancing relevance, engagement, conversion, and user experience.
• Develop approaches to connect content and user context with commerce intent, identifying relevant products, services, offers, or experiences that can naturally complement the user's journey.
• Drive applications of Generative AI, LLMs, and agentic systems for conversational discovery, query understanding, recommendations, summarisation, reasoning over commerce catalogues, and transaction-oriented experiences.
• Develop models and algorithms to optimize the end-to-end commerce funnel, from discovery and consideration through cart creation and transaction, identifying opportunities to reduce friction and improve conversion.
• Lead complex data science initiatives from problem formulation and experimentation through production deployment, establishing strong modelling, evaluation, monitoring, and release practices.
• Design and execute experiments and A/B tests to measure the impact of recommendation, ranking, personalisation, and AI-driven experiences on engagement, conversion, and business outcomes.
• Collaborate closely with Product, Engineering, Data Engineering, AI/ML, Design, and Business teams to translate ambiguous consumer and commerce problems into scalable data science solutions.

Skills and attributes for success:

• Proven experience in data science and machine learning preferably in AdTech or related industries
• Strong proficiency in Python, SQL, and relevant data science libraries (Pandas, Scikit-learn, TensorFlow, PyTorch, etc.)
• Expertise in building and deploying machine learning models into production systems
• Experience with big data technologies (e.g., Hadoop, Spark) and cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Google Cloud)
• Deep understanding of statistical analysis, machine learning, data mining, and predictive modeling techniques
• Should be comfortable leveraging LLMs and internals
• Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to translate business problems into data science solutions

Preferred education and experience:

Master's or PhD in Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, or related quantitative field with 7-10 years of experience in data science/machine learning
