SR.STAFF FIRMWARE APPS ENGINEER

THE ROLE:

AMD is looking for a highly experienced Senior Staff Firmware Development Apps Engineer to join the Embedded x86 Applications Engineering organization.

This role serves as the senior technical bridge between customers, FAEs, Product Management, Program Management, Firmware Engineering, BIOS Engineering, Silicon Engineering, Platform Engineering, Validation, QA, and Customer Support teams.

The Firmware Apps Engineer will provide technical leadership across customer engagements involving firmware architecture, firmware customization, platform enablement, issue triage, root-cause analysis, firmware debugging, engineering escalations, feature requests, and production readiness.

The role requires deep firmware development expertise, strong customer-facing communication skills, and the ability to drive complex technical issues across globally distributed engineering organizations.

The successful candidate will act as the senior firmware subject matter expert for AMD Embedded x86 customers while helping accelerate customer adoption, improve product quality, and reduce issue resolution cycle times.

THE PERSON:

The ideal candidate is a recognized technical leader with extensive firmware development experience, strong debugging capabilities, and a proven track record supporting external customers and complex embedded platforms.

This person is comfortable operating in highly ambiguous technical environments, translating customer requirements into engineering solutions, driving cross-functional issue resolution, and influencing product direction.

• Strong customer-facing presence with excellent communication skills.
• Deep technical expertise in embedded firmware development and debugging.
• Strong system-level understanding across firmware, BIOS, silicon, operating systems, and platform hardware.
• Comfortable working with FAEs, customer engineers, engineering specialists, and leadership stakeholders.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Strategic Customer Technical Ownership

  • Serve as the primary firmware technical lead for Embedded x86 customer engagements.
  • Drive customer escalations involving firmware functionality, integration, customization, and platform enablement.
  • Drive technical discussions with customers, FAEs, and engineering organizations.
  • Influence customer adoption, production readiness, and long-term customer success.

  Firmware Development & Customization

  • Support firmware architecture, design, development, and integration activities.
  • Work with customers to understand firmware feature requirements and implementation needs.
  • Support customer-specific firmware configurations and feature enablement.
  • Evaluate firmware enhancement requests and technical feasibility.

  Advanced Firmware Debug & Root Cause Analysis

  Lead investigations involving:

  • Embedded firmware environments , Platform initialization flows, Secure boot and platform security, Power management firmware, Platform management controllers,Firmware-silicon interactions, Firmware validation failures, Boot and runtime failures, Device initialization and enumeration issues ,Field-reported firmware defects

  Customer Escalation Management

  • Lead customer-critical firmware escalations.
  • Develop structured debug plans and technical containment strategies.
  • Provide detailed root-cause analysis and customer workaround recommendations.
  • Drive closure across firmware, BIOS, silicon, platform, and validation teams.

  Engineering Collaboration

  • Work closely with:
  • Firmware Engineering, BIOS Engineering, Silicon Engineering, Platform Engineering, Validation, Product Management, Program Management
  • Drive issue prioritization and resolve cross-functional technical dependencies.

  Customer & Field Enablement

  • Support FAEs and customer-facing teams with advanced firmware technical expertise.
  • Conduct architecture reviews and custom-er technical workshops.
  • Provide firmware guidance, training, and best practices.

  Continuous Improvement & Innovation

  • Develop internal tools to improve debug productivity.
  • Influence future firmware architecture improvements based on customer and field feedback.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

• • 13+ years of experience in Firmware Development, Embedded Software Development, Customer Engineering, Platform Engineering, Applications Engineering, or related technical roles.
  • Strong hands-on firmware design, development, and debugging experience on embedded or x86 platforms.
  • Experience developing and debugging low-level firmware and platform software.
  • Experience with boot flows, firmware initialization, power management, security, and platform management functions.
  • Strong understanding of:
  • Firmware architecture , Embedded systems, Platform bring-up, Debug methodologies, System software interactions
  • Experience supporting external customers, ODM/OEM engagements, field escalations, and production deployments.
  • Strong platform-level debug skills spanning firmware, BIOS, operating systems, device drivers, silicon, and platform hardware.
  • Strong Linux and embedded Linux experience.
  • Experience with Python, C/C++, Shell scripting, and automation frameworks.
  • Prior experience with AMD Embedded products, industrial, networking, automotive, storage, communications, or compute platforms is preferred.

  Academic Credentials

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field is required.
  • Master's degree in a relevant engineering or computer science discipline is preferred.
  • Equivalent industry experience in firmware development, embedded software, platform engineering, or customer engineering may be considered where applicable.
