About The Job:
The Senior Staff Database Engineer designs, builds, and optimizes mission-critical database platforms supporting global-scale systems. This role combines deep technical expertise across OLTP and Big Data platforms with advanced automation, observability, and AI-driven optimization.
The engineer drives architectural innovation, performance tuning, and reliability improvements while mentoring engineers and collaborating with cross-functional teams.
This position suits a senior technologist passionate about solving complex distributed system challenges, driving automation, and advancing next-generation data infrastructure at scale.
Lead design of multi-cloud database solutions leveraging Terraform, Ansible, Puppet, and Kubernetes.
Implement Infrastructure-as-Code, CI/CD pipelines, and GitOps workflows for schema and infrastructure automation.
Conduct performance optimization, query tuning, and replication improvements for mission-critical systems.
Design and maintain SLIs/SLOs/SLA standards ensuring system reliability and availability.
Drive automation through Python-based and AI/ML-powered observability and remediation tools.
Lead high-severity incident response, root cause analysis, and postmortems.
Collaborate across development, DevOps, and data science teams on scalable data solutions.
Mentor engineers, promote best practices, and influence architectural standards.
Contribute to strategic initiatives transforming PayPal's global data and analytics infrastructure.
Qualifications:
15+ years relevant experience and a Bachelor's degree OR Any equivalent combination of education and experience.
Strong expertise in distributed systems, Big Data (Hadoop, Spark, Kafka), and analytics platforms.
Proficiency in Terraform, Ansible, Puppet, Packer, and Kubernetes for automation and IaC.
Advanced programming in Python and Bash; strong SQL proficiency.
Deep understanding of observability and reliability tools (Prometheus, Grafana, Datadog, ELK).
Experience designing for redundancy, failover, and disaster recovery.
Strong knowledge of multi-cloud environments (AWS, GCP, Azure).
Skilled in Linux administration, network architecture, and database security.
Demonstrated ability to lead complex technical initiatives and mentor others.
