eBay Live Engineering builds and operates the real-time platform behind eBay's live shopping and interactive experiences. We combine low-latency video, interactive chat, and commerce actions with robust trust, safety, and analyticsat global scale.
Responsibilities
- Platform-Level Technical Leadership: Set technical direction for large-scale backend platforms and critical services powering eBay's global marketplace, leading the design and evolution of highly available, fault-tolerant systems with a strong focus on performance, security, and long-term sustainability.
- Organizational & Domain Ownership: Own multiple large functional areas or platforms, driving the most complex, cross-domain initiatives from early concept through production adoption, with clear accountability for technical and business outcomes.
- Architecture & Strategy Influence: Define and influence long-term architecture across organizations by authoring and stewarding Architecture Decision Records (ADRs), shaping platform strategy, and guiding senior engineers toward sound, scalable technical decisions.
- Engineering Bar Raising & Enablement: Act as a force multiplier by raising engineering standards across teams, evolving culture, processes, and practices, and enabling teams through mentorship, tooling, shared platforms, and reusable frameworks.
- Anticipatory & Future-Oriented Design: Anticipate future platform needs by identifying areas of volatility and growth, designing flexible, extensible architectures that unlock engineering velocity while minimizing long-term technical risk.
- Quality, Automation & Observability Leadership: Set expectations and best practices for test-first development, automation, CI/CD, and observability at scale, ensuring systems are measurable, resilient, and continuously improving in production.
- Cross-Org Collaboration & Alignment: Partner and influence across multiple domain teams, product leadership, and engineering organizations to align technical roadmaps with long-term business strategy and deliver outcomes at enterprise scale.
- Operational & Reliability Leadership: Provide technical leadership for engineering support, release management, and on-call operations for an always-on, 24/7 platform, driving incident preparedness, system resilience, and operational maturity across teams.
- Long-Term Technology Vision: Define and champion a multi-year technology vision to modernize platforms, reduce complexity, and ensure backend systems remain adaptable in a rapidly changing technical and business environment.
Qualifications
- Education & Experience: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent experience), with 10+ years of experience building large-scale, distributed web platforms and APIs, including 5+ years in architect or technical lead roles with end-to-end ownership across multiple domains.
- Architecture & System Design Expertise: Deep experience designing end-to-end distributed systems, including GraphQL and REST APIs, messaging systems, relational and NoSQL databases, containerized services, and underlying infrastructure, with deep expertise in multiple core components. Experience with GraphQL is strongly preferred.
- Technical Strategy & Roadmap Ownership: Proven ability to define and drive technical strategy and multi-year roadmaps across organizations, making pragmatic trade-offs to deliver scalable solutions that balance near-term business needs with long-term platform sustainability.
- Architectural Decision-Making & Influence: Demonstrated success aligning senior stakeholders on significant architecture decisions and technical direction in ambiguous problem spaces through clear documentation and stewardship of Architecture Decision Records (ADRs).
- Cross-Team Technical Leadership: Extensive experience independently leading complex, cross-team technical initiatives from inception through successful delivery, serving as a technical authority and escalation point across domains.
- Engineering Excellence & Enablement: Track record of developing and driving adoption of engineering practices, standards, and platforms that measurably improved code quality, developer productivity, and delivery velocity across the organization.
- Domain & Platform Experience: Experience with real-time, high-throughput systems such as live commerce or live streaming platforms is a strong plus, as is hands-on experience with WebSockets or similar real-time communication technologies.
